Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday evening, handing the defending champions their first LaLiga defeat of the season and reigniting the race for the title.
The French forward struck in both halves to secure a crucial victory for José Mourinho’s side, ending Barcelona’s nine-match winning streak in the Spanish top flight and reducing the gap between the arch-rivals to three points after 10 matches.
Barcelona remain top of the standings with 27 points, while Atletico Madrid occupy second place on 26 points. Real Madrid sit third on 24 points following a result that significantly narrows the margin for error in the title race.
The defeat also denied Barcelona the opportunity to establish a nine-point advantage over their traditional rivals.
Mbappé Gives Madrid First-Half Advantage
Barcelona started with greater possession, seeking to dictate the tempo of the contest, but Real Madrid remained dangerous whenever opportunities arose to attack quickly.
The hosts struggled to translate their control of the ball into clear-cut chances, while Madrid looked to exploit spaces behind the Barcelona defence through their pace and direct attacking play.

The visitors took the lead in the 41st minute through a fortunate sequence involving Mbappé and Gerard Martín.
A delivery from Yan Diomande caused confusion in the Barcelona defence, with Martín’s attempted clearance ricocheting off Mbappé and finding its way past goalkeeper Joan García.
The goal gave Madrid the advantage heading into the interval, leaving Barcelona with work to do despite enjoying significant spells of possession.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin started in place of Thibaut Courtois, who missed the encounter after reportedly being affected by flu-like symptoms.
Barcelona sought a response after the restart, gradually increasing the pressure on the visitors as they pushed for an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Raphinha restored parity. A quickly taken corner created the opening, with Pedri supplying the ball for the Brazilian winger to finish with a well-placed effort beyond Lunin.

The goal lifted the home side, who began to exert greater control over the match and threaten a turnaround.
Camavinga Creates Decisive Moment
Barcelona appeared increasingly comfortable after Raphinha’s equaliser, particularly following the introduction of Frenkie de Jong, as they sought to exploit their growing momentum.
The Catalans pressed for a second goal, but Madrid remained disciplined and continued to look for opportunities to strike on the counterattack.
Their decisive moment arrived in the 87th minute, when a swift attacking move restored the visitors’ lead.
Jude Bellingham helped initiate the move before Eduardo Camavinga advanced into the Barcelona penalty area and delivered a cutback for Mbappé, who finished from close range to complete his brace.
The late goal proved telling, with Madrid holding on through the closing stages to secure three valuable points away from home.
Mbappé’s double further underlined his importance to Madrid’s attacking threat, while the visitors’ ability to punish Barcelona during key moments ultimately proved the difference between the sides.
Mbappé’s strikes have now taken him to 12 LaLiga goals, just one behind Raphinha who scored the consolation for the Catalan club.

The result also marked Madrid’s first away victory against Barcelona since 2023.
Also, Mourinho’s team have now ended a three-match winless run against Barcelona across all competitions, having lost three of their four meetings last season.
It is the first time this season that FC Barcelona have scored less than two goals in a game across their thirteen matches played in all competitions.
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho also took aim at the video assistant referee after the final whistle. “The ref was great but the VAR was asleep for 60 minutes.”
El Clásico Rivalry Delivers Another Twist
The latest encounter added another chapter to El Clásico, one of world football’s most celebrated rivalries, which brings together two Spanish giants with a long history of sporting competition and cultural significance.
The rivalry dates back to their early meetings in 1902 and became a regular fixture of Spanish football following the establishment of LaLiga in 1929. Over the decades, the contest has featured some of the game’s greatest players and has frequently influenced the direction of domestic title races.
Sunday’s result reinforced the importance of the fixture, with Madrid not only claiming local bragging rights but also preventing Barcelona from opening up a substantial advantage at the summit.
For Barcelona, the defeat ends an impressive run of nine consecutive league victories and exposes the narrow margins separating the leading sides.
For Madrid, Mbappé’s clinical finishing and the team’s decisive response after conceding the equaliser provide a significant boost as the campaign progresses.

Barcelona remain in control of the standings, but the title race has tightened considerably. With only three points separating the rivals, Sunday’s Clásico could prove an important early turning point in the battle for the LaLiga crown.
