Ghana have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after edging Argentina 5-4 on penalties in their Round of 16 tie on Wednesday afternoon.

The game ended 1-1 after regulation time, and with no extra time, the contest headed into a penalty shootout, where the Black Maidens converted all five of their kicks to eliminate the tournament debutants and keep their hopes of a historic campaign alive.

Ghana dominated the early exchanges and took a deserved lead in the 15th minute through 15-year-old winger Jessica Appiah, who scored her first goal of the tournament.

Cynthia Obinsrewuo set up the winger with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Appiah to take on an Argentine defender before dropping her shoulder and firing into the top corner. Her precise finish left the Argentina goalkeeper with little chance of making a save and rewarded Ghana for their bright start.

The Black Maidens continued to create opportunities but failed to extend their advantage before the break, leaving them with a slender lead despite their control of the encounter.

Maidens Pay for Missed Chances

Ghana appeared to have doubled their advantage after the restart, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside in the build-up, denying Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side the cushion they needed to take firmer control of the tie.

Their task became more difficult with 13 minutes remaining when left-back Hajara Adam was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, forcing Ghana to defend with 10 players for the remainder of regulation time.

Argentina took advantage of their numerical superiority and found the equaliser four minutes from full-time through River Plate striker Mercedes Diz, whose goal brought the debutants back into the contest.

The South Americans grew more dangerous after restoring parity and threatened to complete the turnaround before the final whistle.

However, Ghana held their nerves under pressure, defended with determination and forced the match into a penalty shootout.

During the shootout, the Black Maidens maintained their composure, scoring all five of their attempts. Sarafina Essenam, Christiana Ashiaku, Rafia Osman, Juliana Gyekyewaa and Jessica Appiah all converted their kicks to secure a 5-4 victory.

Argentina’s failure to convert their second attempt proved decisive, as Ghana punished the miss by remaining perfect from the spot to seal their place in the last eight.

The victory underlined the team’s resilience after surrendering their lead late in regulation time and overcoming the disadvantage of playing with 10 players.

Black Maidens Target Historic Semi-final Return

Ghana will now face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between Japan and Kenya in the quarter-finals as they seek to continue their impressive run in Morocco.

The qualification marks Ghana’s fifth in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and their first since 2018, following their absence from the last three editions of the tournament. Ghana reached the last 8 in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and now 2026.

The Black Maidens have a proud history at the competition, having established themselves among the leading teams during its early editions. Their finest achievement came in 2012 in Azerbaijan, where Ghana finished third to record their best-ever performance at the tournament.

That bronze-medal finish remains the benchmark for the West African side, who will now have an opportunity to move a step closer to matching or surpassing that achievement.

Reaching the semi-finals would represent another significant milestone for Adarkwa’s team, who have demonstrated attacking quality and determination throughout the competition.

With a place in the last four now just one victory away, Ghana will look to build on their hard-fought triumph over Argentina and maintain their momentum as the tournament enters its crucial stage.
