Hip-hop artist J. Cole has submitted a letter to a federal judge expressing support for Lil Durk’s request for pretrial release.

The letter, addressed to U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald, forms part of a new bond package filed by Durk’s attorneys on 27 October 2026. A bond review hearing is scheduled for 4 November 2026 in Los Angeles. Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, remains in federal custody while awaiting a separate trial set for 30 August 2027.

In September 2026, a jury acquitted Banks of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case connected to the August 2022 fatal shooting of Saviay’a Robinson, also known as Lul Pab, near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. Prosecutors had alleged the plot targeted rival rapper Quando Rondo in retaliation for the 2020 killing of King Von. Co-defendants were convicted on related stalking counts but cleared of the murder-for-hire charge.

Banks continues to face a Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering charge and associated firearms allegations stemming from the same incident. Those counts were severed for a separate trial.

About J. Cole

J. Cole, whose full name is Jermaine Cole, introduced himself in the letter as a musician from Fayetteville, North Carolina, currently on a European leg of a world tour supporting his latest album. He described himself as a “middle child” of hip-hop, positioned between earlier legends and the generation that followed him.

He referred to Banks as part of that younger cohort, calling the artists “my little brothers.”

Cole wrote that he became more familiar with Banks through their collaboration on the 2023 track “All My Life.” He recalled initially hesitating to join the song, which features an uplifting chorus performed by children and focuses on overcoming difficult circumstances.

Cole said he preferred a “raw and street” option that would challenge him more, but Banks persuaded him of the value of promoting a message of change, peace, growth and maturity. The song later earned a Grammy Award for best melodic rap performance and achieved multi-platinum status.

Cole described Banks as consistently respectful and noted that the Chicago artist would check on his well-being. He also recounted a visit to a juvenile detention facility in Cleveland where many young people identified Banks as an inspiration and named “All My Life” among their favourite songs. Cole presented these observations as evidence of Banks’s character and potential positive influence.

The bond filing includes additional letters of support from Jay-Z and other figures, along with a statement from Robinson’s mother, Andrea Robinson, indicating that her family does not object to bond if the court finds it appropriate. Sony Music Entertainment offered to guarantee an appearance bond of up to one million dollars.

Banks has proposed pledging future music royalties, publishing income, touring revenue and other earnings as security, with his attorneys arguing that any violation would leave him and his family financially destitute.

Defence Lawyers Reaction

Defence lawyers have pointed to the recent acquittal as weakening the government’s remaining case and reducing concerns about witness intimidation or flight risk. Prosecutors are expected to oppose the release request. Banks has been held since his arrest in October 2024. Earlier bond applications were denied.

The letter from J. Cole and the broader package will be considered at the upcoming hearing. The outcome will determine whether Banks can await the 2027 trial under court-supervised conditions or remain in custody.

The case continues to draw attention within the music industry due to the involvement of major artists and the financial commitments offered as collateral.
