A young man who has been posing as a stranded student of the University of Ghana, legon, has been arrested by the school’s Security.

A statement from the university revealed that the imposter confessed to the offence and indicated that he was hired by some students to pretend he was one of them. He disclosed that he resided at the Commonwealth Hall illegally in the last academic year.

According to the statement released by the school, the imposter had a fake student ID number and was put up to the move to get bad press for the school by sleeping in front of Commonwealth Hall.

“He was lured to pose as a stranded student and slept in front of Commonwealth Hall during the night of Monday, January 16, 2023, to gain media attention. He has been handed over to the police for further investigations.”

Management of UG

Management of the university, however, assured the students, parents and the general public that all former legal residents of Commonwealth Hall and male students of Mensah Sarbah Hall have been duly assigned rooms at UGEL halls.

According to the school, “measures have also been put in place to assist students with genuine financial difficulty paying the residential fees in the UGEL Halls. Academic work is proceeding peacefully, and the university assures all students that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure their safety and well-being.”

Management of the school, further encouraged students to be alert and report to the appropriate authorities, individuals who seek to entice them to disturb the peace on the university campus.

“Any student found to be involved in such acts will face appropriate disciplinary processes. We look forward to a fruitful and productive academic year.”

Accomodation Crisis At UG And Other Institutions

Accommodation crises in several universities in the country has been a major blow to students, as well as parents, as it leaves most of the students who have gained admission at the beginning of an academic year stranded and unattended to, making it difficult to have sound minds for academic activities.

Prior to the arrest of the imposter, the University of Ghana, Legon (UG) announced in December 2022, a review of students’ residence arrangements, beginning the 2022/23 academic year.

According to a statement issued by the Registrar on Wednesday December 14, 2022, all continuing students of Commonwealth Hall were not to return to their rooms. Continuing male students of Mensah Sarbah Hall were also affected by this directive. Students were to be randomly assigned to available rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels, the statement noted.

The statement further instructed that, only Level 100 and graduate students will be assigned to these halls while measures were being put in place to ensure that only freshers and graduate students occupy traditional halls.

This, will therefore see the implementation of a full ‘in-out-out-out’ policy by 2025/2026.

Some students of the University of Ghana (UG) following the release of the statement, expressed their concerns about management’s decision to revoke the residential status of some continuing students at their affiliate halls of residence.

In a press statement, the students described management’s decision to revoke the residential status of continuing students of Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth halls as ‘heartless’.

“Why does University Management want to rid young level 100 of mentorship, senior course mates advice and the benefits that they enjoyed by having continuing students direct them when they were in the University?

“How does University Management expect Vikings and Vandals to competitively match other halls in terms of sports, SRC activities and even leadership of JCRs when all students in these halls will be level 100s? We would want to send a firm notice to University Management, that we will fight for our rights with all tools at our disposal, we would not stand and watch our future and that of other future generations jeopardized because you as management failed!”
