Dirty Politics Of ‘Backstabbing’ Pervading Ghana’s Parliament

Parliament of Ghana

The parliament house of Ghana, has over the years been a place of trust amongst members of Parliament but nowadays, the dirty act of ‘backstabbing’ seems to be permeating Ghana’s Parliament.

The dirty act of ‘backstabbing’ is a treacherous art, that should not be seen in Parliament because losing the trust and respect for other Members of Parliament would cost a political party, highly.

Fun fact is, the betrayal of trust and concern is premised on individual standards, greed for wealth and an honor to a family or friend.

Ghana, Gaza, and the Challenge of Principled Diplomacy

It is safe to allude that many would want to abide by the golden rule ‘do unto others, what you want others to do unto you’. Mentally, that is how many live but in action, most people put their needs and obsessions first.

Over the eons, the dirty politics of ‘backstabbing’, comes in when a politician’s ideals do not go hand in hand, with that of the group at large. As such, there is the need to betray others and then the ‘lone ranger’ goes a separate way from the decision of the political group.

Many would disagree with the attitude of being a traitor, when it matters most but when push comes to shove, same would abandon their ideals for the sake of their own treacherous opinions. Easier said than done, one who betrays the trust of another, usually does it out of jealousy and envy but in Parliament, such is not the case.

Politicians in Ghana, would do anything to satisfy either their constituents, nation or personal greed. Such is the scenario that played out in Parliament on Friday, during the voting on the Appointed Ministers, Deputies and Chief Justices, that were named by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The art to deceive is found in everyone, especially one in whom power resides. Members of Parliament deceive each other, for the greater good in their own perspectives. These politicians execute treacherous acts to receive a reward, either in a short or in long term. No one would go against the pack, if they knew they would not receive a greater reward in the near future.

As it is often said, ‘all is fair in love and war’. Man has the power to betray the trust of another, when they have something at stake.

Treacherous acts of Member of Parliament

As the air was filled with tension in Parliament days ago, that same environment was soothing to others.

Members in the Ghanaian Parliament, have taken turns in going against the leadership of their respective parties, by takingmatters into their own hands.

During the decision on who becomes the next Speaker of Parliament, no one would have imagined that Alan Bagbin from the National Democratic Congress (NDC); which is the minority Caucus, would have ever become the Speaker of Parliament.

As the saying goes, ‘do not bite the hand that feeds you’. In fact, one New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP voted for Alban Bagbin, which should have been unlikely. This could be likened to disgracing the people who trusted the NPP MPs to vote for someone in the majority, instead of the minority.

As stated earlier, people in power tend to act on their own premonition, rather than following the laid down rules of a Political Party, when there is something at stake. Thus, leading to the act of ‘backstabbing’, flooding Ghana’s Parliament.

Likewise, the same thing ensued in Parliament days ago, when the NDC in Parliament voted side by side with the NPP in accepting appointed Ministers by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The leaders of the NDC cautioned its Members of Parliament to reject the new appointed minsters at all cost but on the day of voting, there was a massive shock as the appointed ministers were all approved.

This proves why priorities change when it comes to what an individual think is right, in as much as their colleagues deem that particular act, wrong. Koku Anyidoho, once said that there is nothing wrong when things do not go accordingly as the party wills because anything is bound to happen.

Members of Parliament have infused the dirty politics of ‘Backstabbing’ in their duties, to an extent where it has become the order of day. This is now seen as a normal ordeal that should take place in Parliament.

To see their will through, for greed, and to honor the code of friendship, Members of Parliament will keep being backstabbers. So long as there is something to protect or an ideal to live for, the dirty politics of ‘Backstabbing’ will keep pervading Ghana’s Parliament.
