The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s plan for the Presidency is being questioned by a member of the NPP’s communications team.

Attorney Andrew Appiah Dankwa claims that the Vice President has not expressed a vision for the office.

He asserted that the Vice President must present a clear vision for the office. In response to the news that an NPP group had picked up nomination forms for the Vice President to run in the NPP’s presidential primary, Mr. Appiah Dankwa posed this query.

“As we speak, the vice President has not put out any vision for jostling for the position of the party’s flagbearer.”

Lawyer Andrew Appiah Dankwa

In an interview, Mr. Dankwa, who is also a well-known backer of the Alan for President 2024 campaign, made this statement.

“There is a need for the vice president to make known his vision for the presidency as a leading contender as Mr Alan Kyeremanten has done with his Great Transformation Agenda (GTA) for Ghana’s transformation.

“I have not heard anywhere that the vice president has made public his vision for the presidency after his boss has exited the seat of governance.”

Bawumia To File For Flagbearership

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership election is scheduled to take place later this year, and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has given the strongest hint that he will enter the race.

Speaking to a variety of his fans in the Volta Region, Bawumia emphasized that the NPP will ‘break the eight’, alluding to the party’s aspirations to win a historic third consecutive term in 2025, when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s two mandates (eight years) come to a conclusion.

“I want you to know that I appreciate your support, we are going to break the eight. First of all, we are going to have to go and file for the flagbearership which I am going to do.”

Bawumia emphasized when he was flanked by Dr. Archibald Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, and standing in front of an office with the sign “Supporters of DMB Hohoe”: “Winning the flagbearership, break the eight and go into Jubilee House, I need your support, thank you very much.”

The Vice President is one of ten candidates, who have officially declared their interest in receiving the baton from Akufo-Addo for the position of NPP leader.

For the contest that was originally scheduled for later this year, only roughly half of them have chosen nomination forms thus far.

If more than five candidates file to run, a preliminary round will be held, with only five candidates moving on to the main round of voting.

The other nine known aspirants are as follows: Former Trade and Industry Minister, John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen; MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto.

Former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko; Former Minster for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey; Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong; Former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimoh, Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba(UEW), Eric Sakyi Nketiah and a Former MP for Offinso North constituency and Minister for Regional Cooperation and NEPAD, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku.

The presidential primary nomination season will run from May 26 until June 24, 2023. On November 4, 2023, the NPP will hold its presidential primaries to choose its standard-bearer and represent the party in the 2024 election.

However, the party will call a Special Congress on August 26, 2023 if more than five candidates submit paperwork to run in the primaries.
