I Was Supposed To Be The Only Host – Krymi

Ghanaian singer and guitarist, Krymi

Singer and guitarist Henry Nuamah, also known as Krymi, has revealed that, initially, he was going to be the only hosting artist on the megahit called “Dw3”.

He indicated Kaywa, the producer of the song and the CEO of the Highly Spiritual record label knew the Highlife song was going to be very successful upon release so they came together to make it happen.

“Dw3 was his [Kaywa] idea,” Krymi noted.

According to Krymi, he was in London when his boss at the Highly Spiritual record company called him saying, “I have this song. I want you guys to do it.”

Krymi noted that Initially, he [Kaywa] wanted just him to do it, adding that Kaywa later called him having changed his mind.

Kaywa explained “If one person does it, it is likely the song’s success will overshadow the artist. The way I see it, you guys have to do it together so that everyone can blow [become successful] together,” Krymi said.

Due to this, Kaywa had Mr Drew, his signee at the time, join Krymi on the song. Eventually, when “Dw3” was released on December 15, 2019, rap juggernaut Sarkodie was the guest artist, with Krymi and Mr. Drew hosting.

The song became an instant hit and occasioned an all-star remix. In April 2020, the remix was released and guests were Quamina MP, Fameye, DopeNation, Kofi Mole, and Bosom P. Yung.

Meanwhile, Krymi revealed he is now an independent artist. His contract with Kaywa’s Highly Spiritual, ended last year in October. He further noted that he has been corresponding with the label to smoothen things out ever since his exit.

The award-winning singer-songwriter noted also that, even though he is on no record label currently, “I have a management team with me who are doing so much to put me out there,” he said.

Traveling By Plane For The First Time

The Highlife song, “Dede”, released in 2018, according to the singer-songwriter was the song that made him travel for the first time.

He explained the international trip was to London. Krymi said concerning the success of his breakthrough song Dede:

“It has opened so many doors for me. This was the song that gave me my first award – Ghana Music Awards UK. This was the song that brought so many people to Kyrmi. And when I say people, I am talking about the fans that have core love for an artiste,” Krymi revealed.

The song, he noted, made people love his voice and songwriting.

The guitarist revealed that when he wrote “Dede”, he was living in his Aunt’s basement at Gbawe Zero in Accra. The song, he narrated, was birthed during a moment he was playing with his guitar. At the back of his mind, he said, was a warning from his Highly Spiritual record label boss, Kaywa, telling him he needed a hit song else what he was doing was in vain.

Searching for a progression on the guitar, Krymi revealed he prayed to God that he really needed a hit song.

“It was at this moment that Dede came to me and I put it together and then I did a voice note and then I sent it to DaBeatGod,” he said.

He recalled walking from his end, on the dusty road, to Gravel Junction where DaBeatGod’s studio was. They enjoyed some weak street fried rice and finished the song after doing one thing after another.

“Eventually, when I sent it over to Kaywa, he was like: ‘This is what I was looking for, this is what I like’,” Krymi said.

He clarified that the song is not about any woman in particular. He only chose the female Ga-Adamge name Dede because it was indigenous and it fit into what he wanted [to do].

“I wanted my chorus to be as simple as possible because I realized, at the time, the songs that were reigning had very simple choruses, so I was like, you know what, let me also get a very simple chorus that everybody can sing along and it would still move with the progression and would be nice,” he said.
