Breaking News; The Magic Of Double Track

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has declared his willingness to be the running mate for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 elections.

During an interview, the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe reiterated his commitment to contributing his services to Ghana in any capacity whenever called upon.

In the race for Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, notable names like Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, have surfaced.

“I am here to serve my nation, in any capacity I find myself I will serve this nation.”

Departing from the NPP’s usual practice, the party, in December 2023, granted Dr. Bawumia additional time to select his running mate, waiving the requirement that the vice presidential candidate be chosen one year before elections. This decision allows Dr. Bawumia a more extended period to carefully consider his options and choose the most suitable candidate for his running mate.

On a separate note, Dr. Adutwum firmly rejected calls for the review of the Free SHS policy. While acknowledging criticisms faced by the policy, he emphasized that it requires targeted improvements rather than a complete review.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, during his national tour, expressed his commitment to reviewing the policy if elected president in the 2024 elections. Dr. Adutwum countered, stating that the current form of the policy doesn’t necessitate a review but rather targeted enhancements.

Highlighting the need for training teachers to ensure effective teaching and better learning outcomes, Dr. Adutwum acknowledged that every policy has areas that need improvement. He emphasized the importance of investing in teacher training to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, ultimately benefiting all Ghanaians.

“Anything that you do, there will be areas that need improvements. [On] improvements we can look to train teachers and make sure that teachers are well prepared to teach for better learning outcomes.”

Responding to questions about the possibility of parents paying for boarding while day education remains free, Dr. Adutwum firmly emphasized the focus on improving learning outcomes.

“No…We just have to improve the learning outcomes and ensure that the investment is worth their while of Ghanaians so that they know that their taxpayers are being used to their benefit and we are bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.”

Dr. Adutwum’s commitment to public service and his stand on the Free SHS policy reflects a dedication to contributing to the betterment of Ghana’s education system.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s declaration of willingness to serve as the running mate for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has ignited discussions about his chances of securing this pivotal position. As the Minister of Education, Adutwum brings a wealth of experience in a critical sector, making him a compelling candidate. His commitment to public service, coupled with his impressive track record, positions him as a potentially influential figure on the NPP’s ticket.

Adutwum’s popularity within the party and his ability to articulate and implement educational policies have garnered attention, bolstering his credibility. The NPP’s decision to grant Dr. Bawumia extended time to select a running mate indicates the party’s recognition of the significance of this decision, and Adutwum emerges as a strong contender.

However, the final decision rests on various factors, including internal party dynamics, regional considerations, and the need for a balanced ticket. While Adutwum’s chances seem promising, political landscapes can be unpredictable. As the NPP navigates these considerations, Dr. Adutwum’s fate as a potential running mate will depend on how well his strengths align with the party’s strategic goals and electoral aspirations.
