Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, disclosed that he once sold recharge cards to pay for his studio sessions because his father did not support his music career.

The ‘Only Fine Girl’ singer opened up about his past struggles.

Spyro revealed that his father, a pastor, was “quite strict”, adding that he however “got rebellious” and had to sell recharge cards to afford the studio time.

“My father is quite strict, he is a pastor. You know the way pastors are with their kids, they are usually quite strict because they have this ideology that pastors children are usually the spoilt ones,” he said.

“My dad never wanted me to do music because I was a fine artist before, I drew so well. For one reason or the other, he stopped me from doing that, and then I started doing music and he wanted to stop me from doing that,” he noted.

The singer revealed that he ventured into music at a young age, adding that he was really good.

“Then I got rebellious and was like no you took this other one from me, you would not be able to take this from me. I ventured into music from a young age and I was really good. I was in the choir and every choirmaster that they brought at that time was like this boy is very good. So it was quite interesting anytime I found myself in that space where music was being displayed. Anything that had to do with music, I just had that flair for it. So it was war because even after I finished secondary school, I started making stops at the studio.

“Then I was selling recharge cards to make ends meet because I had to make ends meet even though I had parents that were feeding me, but nobody sends you after you have finished school. I also liked having the lifestyle, so I had to hustle to pay for my lifestyle and book studio time.”

Confessing Painful Moment

Afropop singer, Spyro, confessed that he was pained that his colleagues, Fireboy DML and Oxlade, hit stardom before him.

Spyro recounted being pained after some of his junior colleagues in the music industry gained prominence before him despite paying to promote his music on blogs back then.

He stated that unknown to him then, God was using his delayed success to teach him that it was not about his talent but His grace.

“I paid for my song to be on NotJustOkay which was a big platform back then. Once you hear their voice tag on a song, the song don blow. So, I thought that [I would blow]. So when Fireboy come blow, I was like, ‘Eh! Fireboy blow before me? God, me I still dey…’ And all those times, God was teaching me that it’s not about my talent but his grace,“ Spyro said.

“Oxlade too. I mean, before Oxlade blew, na me… Eh God! Oxlade was in my show in 2018. I also brought Davido and Mayorkun for the song. I had a song with Davido and Mayorkun in 2018. I thought that the song would blow me,” he stated.

Spyro recounted how frustrated he was when Oxlade and Fireboy DML got to the limelight before him.

“I would post Oxlade on my social media pages and urge fans to watch out for him. And he would come to my DM to appreciate me. Then he just blew before me. I was like, ‘God, what is going on?’

“Na Oxlade and Fireboy blow na im pain me pass. No be say pain but it triggered me. I am happy that they blew at the point they blew but these are people that I was in the industry before them. I was like, ‘God, what is going on?’ So, it was so painful for me. It was frustrating. I would cry. I would struggle with God.”
