The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised alarm and condemned what it terms as an unauthorized pronouncement of its ongoing running mate selection process in the media.

The National Executive Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 7 2024 asserted that the responsibility for selecting a running mate firmly rests with the Flagbearer, in consultation with the council of elders, and subsequent approval by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The National Executive Committee of the opposition party further emphasized that the National Democratic Congress is known for its well-defined and established structure, and hence it considers the running mate selection a crucial decision-making process.

The statement also recounted that the leadership of the party would follow the right and appropriate procedure in the announcement of its running mate for the 2024 general elections and further entreated the general public and members of the party to treat the alleged announcement in the media with contempt.

“It has come to our attention that an announcement was made by Metro TV yesterday regarding the running mate selection, without adherence to the party’s laid-down procedure. The NEC categorically condemns such actions as gross indiscipline, and we want to make it unequivocally clear that such unilateral announcements are not recognized by the party”.

Furthermore, the National Executive Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress admonished all interested parties in the running mate selection process of the party to strictly adhere to the established rules and procedures of the party.

According to the National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress, the party would not tolerate any conduct from any member of the party that would seek to deviate and undermine the established rules and procedures in the selection of the party’s running mate.

The statement further emphasized that any member of the party that deviate from the established rules and procedures in the selection of the party’s running mate would be subjected to the disciplinary measures of the party without hesitations.

Moreover, the National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress while urging the public to disregard the fake announcements of its running mate in the media also emphasized its commitment to a transparent and fair selection process, assuring that any official communication regarding the running mate selection will be made through the appropriate channels following due process.

The National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress statement also included a call on its members and the general public to respect the flagbearer of the party, former President John Dramani Mahama, and trust that he is capable of making the right decision in consultation with the Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee of the party to choose the party’s running mate for the 2024 general elections.

The National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress further emphasized the importance of unity among its members ahead of the announcement of its running mate for the December 7 polls.

The National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress concluded by expressing its appreciation to the rank and file of the party for the continued support and understanding of decisions made by the party leadership and called for more support ahead of the December 7 general elections.
