Prominent Nigerian businessman Femi Otedola has taken to his Twitter page to share his profound grief over the sudden demise of Access Holdings CEO Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and their first son Chizi.

The renowned banker and his family lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the United States on February 10, 2024.

Femi Otedola, a close friend and colleague of Herbert Wigwe, recounted the last moments he shared with the family just two weeks ago at their newly constructed home in Lagos.

Alongside fellow billionaire Aliko Dangote, Otedola was a guest at a dinner hosted by the Wigwes, an evening that now holds bittersweet memories as a farewell to a man described as a “banking genius.”

Herbert had a degree in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.

He also had an MA in Banking and Finance from the University College of North Wales (now Bangor), and an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London.

Wigwe started his career at Coopers & Lybrand, Lagos, as a management consultant, later qualifying as a chartered accountant.

After a stint at Capital Bank, he joined Guaranty Trust Bank where he spent over a decade working in corporate and institutional banking, rising to become the executive director in charge of institutional banking.

Wigwe also served as the Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investment & Securities Limited, and Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS). He was the Chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited until his demise.

Sharing a poignant photo from that evening, Otedola expressed his disbelief and sorrow.

“I am shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of a banking genius Herbert Wigwe, his dear wife Chizoba, and first son Chizi. Exactly two weeks ago Herbie and his wife hosted myself and Aliko to dinner at his newly built home in Lagos. I will cherish and fondly remember my memories of time spent together with him over the years,” he wrote.

“Herbie, we will all miss you. Your legacy will live on forever. My heartfelt condolences go out to his children Tochi, Hannah, and David. I pray God comforts them during this tragic time. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace… F.Ote💲,” he further added.
