Fmr. Majority Leader Says His Resignation A Request By The President

Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The Majority Leader of Parliament, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has indicated that his resignation from the position of the Majority Leader was voluntary and not forced. He disclosed that the President, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, requested that he resigns and he did willingly.

He stated that his resignation as the Majority Leader in Parliament was to ensure peace and calm in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He added that it would ensure his full contribution to the party’s ambition of retaining power during the December General Elections.

“The discussions had the potential of degenerating into consequences, the end results of which could be rather fatal, or as I have stated elsewhere, rather cataclysmic for my party in our effort to break in the eight, which effort has thus far, in the Fourth Republic, not ended successfully for any party in government”.

More so, he indicated that his current position as the Chairman of the NPP flagbearer’s Manifesto Committee is to bring to realization the party’s goal of retaining political power in the 2024 General Elections. He stressed that he would work effortlessly with the committee members to achieve the party’s goal.

The former Majority Leader of Parliament of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) urged other members of the majority caucus to support the new Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin. He stated that their support would facilitate the effective pursuit of the party’s agenda in parliament.

The Member of Parliament further, showed appreciation to the members of the majority for their contributions to the house during his tenure as Majority Leader. He stressed that their input, coupled with the input of other parliamentary staffers, ensured that the “flag of Ghana” was raised high.

Accordingly, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu reminisced on the friendships he built with other Members of Parliament, especially in the minority caucus. He disclosed that his working relationship with some of the members of the minority caucus has transitioned into a close relationship that “encouraged the smooth transition of government business and indeed the course of the country in parliament”.

“Beginning with your good self, the honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Cletus Avoka, my internal friend, Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor, the honorable Haruna Iddrisu, and now the honorable Ato Forson, in the face of these people, we have developed a very cordial relationship even though we belong to different sides of the political spectrum”.

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, while he bemoaned the loss of the former Majority Leader urged Members of Parliament to respect his decision to resign. He also praised the expertise with which the former Leader of the Majority caucus, delivered his duties.

“Many, including my good self, will attest to his outstanding leadership, brilliance rigor, and attention to detail. His uniquely humane and personable nature has always commanded the respect and admiration of his colleagues”.

Furthermore, he beseeched the former Majority Leader to continue contributing his quota to Ghana’s development by lending a hand to any Member of Parliament of both the minority and majority caucuses when the need arises.

Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Member of Parliament for Suame, officially declared his resignation as Majority Leader in Parliament on Friday 23rd February 2024. The Member of Parliament in his several years in Parliament in both minority and majority caucuses has served in many positions such as Deputy Majority Whip, Majority Chief Whip, Deputy Majority Leader, and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs among others.

Conclusively, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s extensive service and contribution to Parliament have made his resignation a loss both to the majority and minority in parliament. His dedication to ensuring the practice of democratic rule and principles is a legacy that no parliamentarian before him has ever attained.
