The National Democratic Congress has touted the achievements of Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang while serving as the Minister of Education under President John Mahama’s administration from 2013 to 2017, describing it as remarkable.
According to the National Democratic Congress, one of the notable accomplishments of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was the transformation of Colleges of Education into full-fledged tertiary institutions.
The party stated that the strategic move aimed to enhance the quality of teacher education and equip educators with the necessary skills to nurture the next generation.

The National Democratic Congress further lauded Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang for introducing the Private Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), providing more flexibility for candidates and fostering inclusivity in the educational system.
Touching on the conversion of Polytechnics into Technical Universities by the Mahama’s administration, the National Democratic Congress attributed the success of the policy to the party’s running mate for the 2024 general, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
According to the party, Professor Naana Opoku-Agyeamang was the one who oversaw the conversion of polytechnics into Technical Universities, facilitating a more practical and industry-relevant approach to tertiary education.
Progressive Free Senior High School Program
Furthermore, the National Democratic Congress praised Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s role in the initiation of the Progressive Free Senior High School (SHS) program, which according to the party benefited almost 458,700 poor and vulnerable students, making quality education accessible to a broader spectrum of children in the country.
Commenting on the elimination of shift system in the country, the National Democratic Congress indicated that the eradication of the shift system in public basic schools was a pivotal move by the former Minister of Education that ensured that several students across the country had access to uninterrupted education and a conducive learning environment.
On the improvement of the Student Loan Trust Fund, the National Democratic Congress stated that the party’s running mate for the 2024 general election while serving as the Education Minister under the erstwhile Mahama’s administration introduced the Students’ Loan Plus initiative, which helped to address the financial challenges of those who gained admission but struggled with initial registration fees due to financial constraints.
The National Democratic Congress also recounted that Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang increased the number of Student Loan beneficiaries from 13,833 in the 2012/2013 academic year to 24,951 in the 2015/2016 academic year as well as increasing the Student Loan amount from Gh¢650 to Gh¢1,000 – Gh¢2,000 while serving as Ghana’s Minister of Education.
Moreover, the National Democratic Congress indicated that the tenure of Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the Education Minister witnessed the successful completion of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region, contributing significantly to the expansion of higher education opportunities in the country.
The party further noted that under Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s leadership as the Education Minister, over 1,100 classroom blocks, 73 teacher flats, and bungalows were constructed in underserved schools and further oversaw the distribution of more than 150,000 tables and chairs to basic schools, ensuring a conducive learning environment for pupils.
In addition, the National Democratic Congress recounted that Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang initiated special interventions to enhance training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects, fostering innovation and skill development.
According to the National Democratic Congress, the above accomplishments and many others including the construction of 123 E-Blocks across the country, in which 47 out of them were fully completed, resourced and operationalized by Professor Naana Opoku-Agyeamng, showcase her unwavering dedication to improving Ghana’s education system.
