Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Ghana’s Chief of Staff has appealed to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to lend his support for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.

This appeal was made during the Asanteman Queen Mother’s Day and Food Fair in the Ashanti Region. The Affirmative Action Bill in Ghana aims to address the historical and ongoing gender disparities in the country by ensuring that women have equal opportunities in governance, public life, and decision-making roles. The bill seeks to achieve gender parity by proposing that at least 40% of public offices be reserved for women.

“Nana, your leadership style not only inspires confidence but also sets a powerful example for the next generation of male leaders to follow. Nana, Ashanti Region has the highest number of MPs in Parliament, as compared to other regions, so your counsel can go a long way to ensure the passage of this Bill.”

Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Ghana’s Chief of Staff

The Affirmative Action Bill is part of a broader effort to address the complex challenges facing women and girls in Ghana, including gender disparities in education, early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and limited access to financial resources.

The Chief of Staff indicated that the bill is a critical step toward achieving gender parity and improving the lives of women in the country. It has been in parliament for over a decade but has not yet been passed, largely due to a lack of commitment from stakeholders and a need for clearer communication of its benefits to all citizens.

The bill is supported by various civil society organizations, women’s groups, and other stakeholders who advocate for its passage. These groups believe that the bill is essential for promoting social justice, countering implicit bias, promoting diversity and inclusivity, and enhancing national unity.

They argue that affirmative action policies are necessary to address the historical injustices that have left deep-seated inequalities in Ghanaian society and to create a more equitable future for all Ghanaians.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

The support from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill can lead to its approval and passage.

Asantehene Osei Tutu II’s endorsement can significantly influence the passage of the bill. His leadership style and the example he sets for the next generation of male leaders can inspire confidence and encourage more support for the bill. His advocacy can help to overcome any resistance or skepticism that might exist within the parliamentary process.

Osei-Opare commended that the Asantehene Osei Tutu II has shown a commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s participation in governance. His support for the Affirmative Action Bill aligns with these values, making it more likely that he will use his influence to advocate for the bill’s passage. This support can help to build a consensus around the bill and encourage more members of the legislature to vote in favor of it

Otumfuo’s efforts in fostering greater female participation in governance within the Ashanti kingdom have increased the involvement of queen mothers in the management of the Ashanti kingdom and their attendance at Asanteman Council meetings.

The Asantehene’s support for the Affirmative Action Bill can also be seen as a way to address historical injustices and promote social justice. By advocating for gender parity, the bill aims to correct the imbalances that have existed for years, and Asantehene’s endorsement can help to highlight the importance of this goal.

She also lauded Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his remarkable 25 years on the Golden Stool, his role in restoring peace across the nation, and his investments in health, particularly the ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’ and the Otumfuo Educational Fund.

The support from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II can expedite the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill by influencing parliamentary decisions, leveraging the significant representation of the Ashanti Region in parliament, promoting gender equality, and addressing historical injustices.
