The National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general election, former President John Dramani Mahama has accused President Akufo-Addo of causing severe damage to the country’s democratic governance through his actions and conducts.
The former President in a scathing critique expressed deep concern over what he described as President Akufo-Addo’s recent conduct and remarks, which he believes undermine the core tenets of democracy in the country.
“The almost eight years of Nana Addo/Bawumia have done extensive damage to our democracy. As the clock ticks towards the end of his mandate, the President’s attitude and utterances give much cause for concern”.

Mr Mahama also underscored President Akufo-Addo’s perceived insistence that traditional chiefs should stand up to greet him in recent times as evidence of the President’s disregard for tradition.
He noted that the repetitive nature of such incidents in recent times is a clear manifestation of an authoritarian trait of President Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
Furthermore, former President John Dramani Mahama condemned President Akufo-Addo’s recent statement asserting that he cannot be succeeded by someone he has previously defeated in elections.
This, according to the National Democratic Congress flagbearer reflects an arrogant and undemocratic disposition of President Akufo-Addo, posing a direct challenge to the peaceful transition of power, a cornerstone of Ghana’s democratic tradition.
Mr Mahama further emphasized that the determination of President Akufo-Addo’s successor should solely rest with the Ghanaian electorate and the will of God, the Almighty.
He underscored the power of the Ghanaian people in changing political leaders as well as in shaping the country’s future in his chastisement against President Akufo-Addo.

Moreover, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer drawing attention to past electoral controversies, particularly the violent events that transpired during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019 and during the 2020 elections where eight innocent citizens lost their lives cautioned against the potential for further manipulation of the democratic process by the current administration.
He accused President Akufo-Addo’s administration of disregarding constitutional norms and resorting to violence to advance its political agenda.
Asserting the resolve of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Ghanaian populace, former President John Dramani Mahama vowed to resist any attempts by President Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party administration to subvert the electoral process in favour of its preferred successor.
In a direct message to President Akufo-Addo, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama also urged him to prioritize overseeing a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process as his most significant legacy to the nation.
He reminded President Akufo-Addo of his responsibility to uphold democratic principles and ensure a smooth transition of power, free from manipulation and violence.
In an earlier critique, Joyce Bawah Mogtari Esq., Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama launched a blistering attack on President Akufo-Addo and his administration, accusing them of endangering Ghana’s democracy.
Lawyer Mogtari did not mince her words, alleging that President Akufo-Addo and his appointees are displaying a blatant disregard for democratic principles and are seemingly intoxicated by power.
She painted a grim picture of an administration she perceives as being on a “mission impossible” driven by a thirst for power while neglecting the welfare of the Ghanaian people.
Lawyer Mogtari further cautioned by stating that President Akufo-Addo’s administration will ultimately face consequences for what she described as its recklessness and corruption.
She also accused the current government of betraying the trust of the electorate and demonstrating disdain towards those who facilitated their ascent to power.
