Veep Touts NPP’s Achievements

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has touted the accomplishments of the governing New Patriotic Party administration under President Akufo-Addo.

According to him, despite recent economic hurdles, the quality of life for Ghanaians has seen significant improvement over the past seven years, in contrast to the previous National Democratic Congress administration under former President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr Bawumia pointed out the difficulties Ghanaians encountered during Mr Mahama’s administration, including intermittent power supply, rising unemployment, tariff increases, and business failures.

“There is no dispute about it. Why do I say so? Because the data says so! You would recall that in the previous government, we endured four years of power outages (which we called ‘dumsor’), which collapsed many businesses and increased unemployment.

“Sure. I can say without any fear of contradiction that notwithstanding the recent economic challenges, which have resulted in hardships for many Ghanaians, the fact remains that the lives of Ghanaians have improved significantly after seven years of our government from what they were during the government of John Mahama.

Among many other things, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia accused the erstwhile Mahama’s administration of failing to provide basic teaching and learning materials to basic schools including chalk.

The Vice President further chastised the opposition National Democratic Congress for the cancellation of the teacher and nursing training allowances, depriving teacher and nursing trainees of government support.

He also stated that the National Health Insurance Scheme and the National Ambulance Service were both in near-collapse when the New Patriotic Party administration assumed power in 2017.

“There were increases in electricity tariffs by an average of 50% annually. And many parents could not afford the fees to send their children to senior high school”.

Touting the New Patriotic Party administration’s achievements since its assumption to office, the flagbearer of the ruling party noted that the government has rolled out numerous policies aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by Ghanaians.

He also highlighted the reinstatement of the previously cancelled teacher and nursing training allowances, emphasising that the governing New Patriotic Party has in addition created more jobs than any other administration.

Moreover, the Vice President and the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia indicated that electricity tariffs over the last six years have seen the lowest increase (11%) for any seven-year period over the last 30 years.

Dr Bawumia also recounted that the governing party provided free electricity for lifeline users for a year and a 50% reduction in tariffs for all other consumers during COVID-19.

He further pointed out that Ghana’s per capita income has increased from GH¢7,756 in 2016 to GH¢19,464 by the end of 2022, with an increased from $1,978 to $2,353 in dollar terms.

Vision for Leadership: Digitalization and Service

In outlining his vision for Ghana’s future, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized his commitment to leveraging digitalization as a transformative force.

As an economist by profession, he pledged evidence-based policy-making and pragmatic governance, focusing on economic development, social equality, and infrastructure improvement.

Asserting his dedication to youth empowerment, economic vibrancy, and social justice, Dr. Bawumia framed his candidacy as a mission to solve problems and make a tangible difference in the lives of Ghanaians.

The New Patriotic Party flagbearer concluded by stressing that his presidential bid transcends mere pursuit of power or prestige but is rooted in a profound dedication to serving the nation and effecting positive change.

He positioned himself as a problem-solver, drawing from his experience at the central bank and as Vice President.
