His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has once again demonstrated his unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability by leading the tree-planting exercise in the Ashanti Region as part of the government’s Green Ghana project. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the revered monarch has actively participated in the initiative, underscoring his long-term commitment to the cause.

The ceremonial tree-planting event took place at the Kumasi Golf Course on Friday, June 7th, 2024, signaling the commencement of the 2024 edition of Green Ghana Day in the Ashanti Region. In a symbolic gesture, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II planted a wawa tree, highlighting his continuous support and belief in the project’s objectives.

Accompanying His Royal Majesty were several dignitaries, including the Chairman of the National Green Ghana Planning Committee, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Members of Parliament, the Forestry Commission Regional Manager, and traditional leaders, among others.

In his brief address, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed the critical importance of protecting and sustainably managing natural resources. He aligned his message with the government’s climate action plans, cautioning against the destruction of forest covers and river bodies. His Royal Majesty commended the government for its proactive steps in safeguarding the country’s vegetative cover and reiterated the necessity for ongoing efforts to preserve Ghana’s natural heritage.

Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, Chairperson of the National Green Ghana Planning Committee, paid special tribute to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his consistent involvement and support since the inception of Green Ghana Day. He highlighted that Otumfuo’s unwavering commitment serves as a testament to the significance and urgency of the Green Ghana project.

“Your Royal Majesty, this year, the President of the Republic has set the national target to 10 million trees. The reason is to give us the avenue to nurture and take care of the trees planted over the last three years.”

“So, we expect to plant at least 10 million trees on this day, and Asanteman has always risen to the challenge, and this year will not be an exception.”

Launched by the Ghanaian government, the Green Ghana initiative aims to combat deforestation, promote afforestation, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. By engaging communities across the country, the initiative seeks to restore degraded landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and improve the quality of life for future generations.

Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, underscored the significance of the tree-planting exercise to the nation. He explained how trees contribute to the survival of mankind, not only through their ecological benefits but also through their medicinal properties, protection of the ecosystem, and the beautification of the environment.

“As we plant the trees today, let us make conscious efforts to continue nurturing these plants to help them grow to maturity. Your Royal Majesty, on behalf of the President, I wish to thank you and Asanteman for your support in the fight against galamsey and your desire to uplift the image of the Asante Kingdom.”

The Regional Minister outlined the diverse benefits of trees, emphasizing their role in maintaining ecological balance, providing essential resources, and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the surroundings. His remarks resonated with the audience, reinforcing the critical importance of the Green Ghana project.

The active participation of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in the Green Ghana project, continues to inspire and mobilize Ghanaians towards environmental conservation. His leadership and dedication serve as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and sustain the nation’s natural resources.

As the 2024 Green Ghana Day progresses, the combined efforts of traditional leaders, government officials, and citizens alike will undoubtedly contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for Ghana. The planting of 10 million trees this year represents a significant step towards achieving the nation’s environmental goals and ensuring the longevity of its rich natural heritage.
