Bono Regional Minister Inspires National Pride in Ghana’s Democratic Achievements

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, inspired Ghanaians to take pride in the nation’s remarkable achievements over the past 30 years of democratic governance.

Addressing a mock parliament organized by the Parliamentary Service in Sunyani, the Regional Minister called on the nation to embrace a future grounded in the principles of democracy, rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights.

The event, held under the theme “Thirty Years of Parliamentary Democracy Under the Fourth Republic: The Journey So Far,” marked three decades of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in Ghana.

The occasion saw the participation of Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, students, civil society actors, political parties, youth and women groups, and traditional authorities. The diverse attendance underscored the wide-reaching impact and significance of Ghana’s democratic journey.

“Today, we stand as a testament to the success of this endeavor, having conducted peaceful transitions of power and upheld the tenets of democracy through free and fair elections.”

Reflecting on Ghana’s turbulent past characterized by military rule and political instability, Madam Owusu-Banahene highlighted the nation’s successful transition to a stable democratic governance.

Madam Owusu-Banahene emphasized the growth and strengthening of Ghana’s democratic institutions over the past three decades.

“Our democratic institutions have grown stronger, and the voice of the people has been given a platform to be heard and respected,” Madam Owusu-Banahene affirmed.

The Regional Minister highlighted the significant strides Ghana has made in economic growth, attributing this progress to investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. She noted that these investments have been instrumental in improving the quality of life for Ghanaians and fostering a conducive environment for development.

The nation’s economy, Madam Owusu-Banahene said, had seen substantial growth, a testament to the dividends of democratic governance.

On the political front, Madam Owusu-Banahene proudly declared Ghana as a beacon of stability in the West African sub-region, if not the entire continent. The country has become a model of democratic governance and a strong advocate for peace and development. This reputation, she stressed, is a result of Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles and governance.

Addressing Persistent Challenges

Despite the notable achievements, Madam Owusu-Banahene acknowledged the ongoing challenges that Ghana faces.

“While we have made commendable progress, we must continue to take actionable steps to address issues of poverty, inequality, and unemployment.”

This, the Regional Minister noted, requires a collective effort and a commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

The Regional Minister underscored the importance of ensuring that the benefits of democracy are felt by all Ghanaians, regardless of their socioeconomic status. She emphasized the need for collective action to achieve this goal.

“The nation must strive and ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt by all Ghanaians irrespective of their socioeconomic status,” Madam Owusu-Banahene stated. This call to action highlighted the importance of inclusivity in the nation’s developmental agenda.

The mock parliament, according to Madam Owusu-Banahene, demonstrated the essence and beauty of democracy through open dialogue, active participation, and the exchange of ideas. She highlighted the importance of these democratic practices in building a stronger and more resilient nation. The event served as a reminder of the values that underpin Ghana’s democracy and the importance of nurturing these values.

“Everybody ought to be guided by the lessons of the past and the vision for a prosperous and democratic country, work together to build a better nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive, where our democratic institutions are strong and resilient, and where the rule of law prevails.”

As Ghana marks 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy, the words of Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene serve as a powerful reminder of the nation’s achievements and the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and prosperous future.

Madam Owusu-Banahene’s speech not only celebrated the past but also inspired hope and commitment towards building a better Ghana for all. The event in Sunyani was not just a commemoration but a reaffirmation of the nation’s dedication to the principles of democracy and good governance.
