This March, film lovers will have a much-anticipated revisit to Zamunda to be reunited with Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) as he is ‘Coming 2 America’.
The 1988 classic comedy, ‘Coming 2 America’, which stole the hearts of many worldwide, is returning to the screens for a sequel directed by Craig Brewer. Ahead of the sequel’s release, its official trailer is here and it is an absolute delight. The new trailer confirms Prince Akeem will return to Queens, to find his heir with his right-hand man Semmi (Arsenio Hall) by his side. ‘Coming 2 America’ will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime video, on March 5, 2021.
In the ‘Coming 2 America’ trailer, Akeem and Semmi’s return to New York sees them crossing paths with a lot of familiar characters, including the same gang who populated the barbershop in the original movie, and somehow that gang hasn’t aged a day in over thirty years.
As has been made plain by trailer and synopsis, the new movie doesn’t stray too far from the formula that made the first film a success: culture-clash comedy plus Murphy and Hall playing multiple characters. However, there is a lot more comedic talent featured in the new film, with Morgan, Jones, and company joining the cast.
Much of the original cast returns including King Jaffe Jofer (James Earl Jones), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), and Maurice (Louie Anderson). The barbershop crew, most of whom were played by Murphy and Hall, also reprise their roles in the sequel. In the original version, Murphy portrayed the owner Clarence and after this role, playing multiple characters became a trademark of his career.
Comedy greats Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, and Tracy Morgan join the cast of the sequel, adding to the buoyancy the original was known for. Bella Murphy (who is the daughter of Eddie Murphy), Kiki Layne, Rotimi, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Teyana Taylor are also among the cast of the highly-anticipated film.
The upcoming romantic comedy was scripted by ‘Black-ish’ creator Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield. Craig Brewer directs the film as Murphy produces alongside Kevin Misher.
However, a possible negative for the new movie is its PG-13 rating, which obviously means things will be more restricted in terms of adult content compared to the R-rated original movie. It remains to be seen if the PG-13 rated ‘Coming 2 America’ will continue Murphy’s renaissance, after the critical success of ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ together with his triumphant Emmy-winning return to ‘Saturday Night Live’ in late 2019.
