In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and ensuring public confidence in the electoral process, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially requested a live broadcast of its upcoming meeting with the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

The National Democratic Congress is to present its observations concerning the 2024 Provisional Voters Register (PVR) at the meeting scheduled for Friday, 6th September 2024, at the EC’s Corporate Head Office.

In a formal letter addressed to the EC Chairperson, NDC General Secretary, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, emphasized the party’s commitment to transparency in the electoral process.

“We believe this will give true meaning to transparency as found in your motto,” Mr Kwetey noted in his correspondence.

The National Democratic Congress’s request for live media coverage according to its General Secretary is expected to allow Ghanaians across the country to follow proceedings in real-time.

Mr Kwetey expressed optimism in the opposition party’s request, urging the Electoral Commission of Ghana to consider the request of the party.

Importance of Public Engagement

The Director of IT and Elections for the NDC, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, reinforced the party’s position in a separate statement, stressing the importance of real-time engagement with the Ghanaian public.

“We believe in the spirit of transparency, Ghanaians must know in real time what we seek to share with the Electoral Commission of Ghana regarding the voters register”.

The meeting, slated to begin promptly at 2 p.m., on Friday, September 6,2024 is expected to cover the NDC’s detailed findings and observations on the 2024 Provisional Voters’ Register.

This session follows mounting scrutiny of the voter registers, a critical component of Ghana’s electoral framework.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on August 27, 2024, requested an emergency meeting with the Electoral Commission of Ghana following what it describes as the discovery of significant discrepancies in the ongoing 2024 voter exhibition exercise.

In a letter addressed to the Electoral Commission, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey highlighted concerns regarding inconsistencies between the Provisional Voter Register (PVR) provided to the party and the registers exhibited at various centres across the country.

The letter, sent from the NDC Party Headquarters in Accra, underscores the party’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections

Given the contentious nature of voter registration in the lead-up to the general elections, the NDC’s move to publicize its findings aims to foster an open dialogue and eliminate doubts about the integrity of the voter register.

The NDC’s push for a live broadcast signals the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, ensuring that the public is not only informed but also engaged in the electoral process.

With the Electoral Commission’s motto centred around transparency, the NDC’s request highlights the need for openness in electoral administration, particularly at such a crucial juncture in Ghana’s political calendar.

The outcome of Friday’s meeting, which could reveal significant concerns or commendations related to the PVR, is likely to influence public perception of the EC’s preparedness for the 2024 elections.

A live broadcast would further position the NDC’s findings as a matter of national importance, creating space for public debate and scrutiny.

The role of the EC in maintaining a credible voter register ahead of the December elections remains pivotal.

The NDC’s latest appeal reflects the broader demand for transparency, particularly in electoral management, which has been a recurring theme in Ghana’s democratic development.
