On the occasion of Ghana’s first President Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has given a profound and passionate tribute at Nkroful, commemorating Osagyefo’s birthday.

His delivery not only honored the legacy of Nkrumah but also called attention to the enduring relevance of Nkrumah’s vision for both Ghana and Africa. The event marked a reflective moment for John Mahama, who spoke about Nkrumah’s ideals and the ongoing battle to uphold his legacy amid attempts to revise the nation’s history.

John Mahama began by acknowledging the significance of Nkroful, where Kwame Nkrumah, a visionary leader, was born. He noted that Nkrumah’s influence extended beyond Ghana’s borders, impacting the entire continent. According to John Mahama, Nkrumah was instrumental in changing the course of African history, marking him as not just a national leader but a continental force.

“I am deeply honored to be standing here on this hallowed land of Nkroful, the birthplace of a visionary leader, the nation’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who shaped not only the history of Ghana but the destiny of Africa.”

John Mahama’s tribute highlighted one of Nkrumah’s most iconic moments—the declaration of Ghana’s independence in 1957. He emphasized that the proclamation Nkrumah made at the old Polo Grounds in Accra was a watershed moment in global history, particularly for the decolonization movement across Africa.

Mahama quoted Nkrumah’s famous words: “At long last, the battle has ended, and Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever.” He described this declaration as an “earth-shaking event” that marked the beginning of the end of colonial rule on the continent. Nkrumah’s dream, according to JohnMahama, was not just for Ghana’s independence but for the political, economic, and social liberation of the entire African continent.

Moreover, John Mahama acknowledged that while Nkrumah’s vision for a united Africa was bold and transformative, it remains largely unfulfilled even half a century after his passing. The challenges Africa continues to face in terms of political unity, economic development, and social cohesion are testaments to the fact that Nkrumah’s work is still in progress. In his words, “This is a vision we are still struggling to fulfill up to today, even half a century after he passed on.” John Mahama lamented that the Africa Nkrumah envisioned—a united and liberated continent—remains an aspiration rather than a reality.

Defending Nkrumah’s Legacy: A Call Against Historical Revisionism

John Mahama used the occasion to address recent attempts to obliterate Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s history. He highlighted that Nkrumah’s achievements were not merely the product of his ideals but of his tangible actions toward realizing those ideals.

“There are those who seek to dilute Nkrumah’s role in our history as the nation’s founder by introducing the idea of a Big Six.”

He argued that these efforts were born out of “hatred and bitterness” from those who disliked Nkrumah, adding that such sentiments still surface from time to time, as evidenced by the derogatory remarks made about Nkrumah in public discourse.

The Nation’s Outrage at Disrespect Towards Nkrumah

John Mahama also addressed a recent controversy where Kwame Nkrumah was referred to disrespectfully, sparking national outrage.

“The hatred and bitterness harbored by those who disliked and hated Nkrumah still erupts from time to time, as exemplified in the recent outrage that was expressed by the whole nation at the description of Kwame Nkrumah in the derogatory term of ”your Kwame Nkrumah’ – ‘Saam Okwaame Nkrumahno.’ History cannot be revised.”

John Mahama’s emphasis is a call for national unity in recognizing Nkrumah’s contributions and preserving his legacy. The divisive debates over Nkrumah’s legacy, he said, are unnecessary and detract from the nation’s progress.

“Founders Day must be a day that recognizes Nkrumah, the leader who delivered independence to Ghana and whose vision was continental in scope.”

John Dramani Mahama’s speech in Nkroful was a heartfelt tribute to Kwame Nkrumah, reaffirming his place as a towering figure in Ghana’s and Africa’s history. Through his words, Mahama reminded the nation that Nkrumah’s vision of a united and liberated Africa is still alive and that the struggle to fulfill that vision continues. As attempts to revise history persist, Mahama’s call for a united front in defending Nkrumah’s legacy resonates deeply with those who continue to hold the ideals of Ghana’s first president in high regard.
