The Minority Leader and the leader of the National Democratic Congress Caucus in Parliament,  Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has expressed profound excitement and gratitude over the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s decisive victory in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections and issued a call for a renewed focus on governance with integrity.

Speaking during the first day of Parliament’s resumption, Dr Ato Forson congratulated all members of Parliament who retained their seats and extended well wishes to those who were unable to return, thanking them for their service.

He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their resounding decision in the polls, which not only secured a parliamentary majority for the NDC but also elected John Dramani Mahama as Ghana’s next President.

“At this point, Mr Speaker, it is finished. Rt. Hon. Speaker, I would want to thank the good people of Ghana for electing His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the next president of the Republic of Ghana”.

Dr. Forson characterized the election results as a “revolution” and a revolt against a government he described as “obstinate, insensitive, and dismissive of public opinion.”

He attributed the NDC’s sweeping victory to the collective frustration of Ghanaians with the NPP’s mismanagement, arrogance, and impunity.

“It was a revolt against a government that calls dissenting voices names such as distractors, cynics, and naysayers,” he said, invoking the biblical imagery of Sanballat and Tobiah to describe how the outgoing administration belittled opposing views.

The NDC, which held 137 seats in the 8th Parliament, gained an unprecedented number of seats in the 9th Parliament, capturing over 50 constituencies previously held by the NPP.

This achievement, Dr Forson noted, demonstrated the dedication of NDC MPs and the deep dissatisfaction of Ghanaians with the outgoing government.

A Call for Introspection

The Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency, Dr Forson further urged Ghana’s political class to reflect deeply on the election results, cautioning against the arrogance and impunity that characterized the NPP administration.

He warned that no government should take the people’s mandate for granted, as Ghanaians have shown their willingness to hold leaders accountable.  “What happened to the NPP and the outgoing government is a lesson: the political class cannot and should not take the people of Ghana for granted,” he declared.

Addressing the National Democratic Congress directly, Dr. Forson called for vigilance, humility, and adherence to the principles of integrity, probity, and accountability.  “We cannot be like the NPP government.  The time has come for us to do right by the people of Ghana at all times,” he said.

The Minority Leader described the upcoming 9th Parliament as a “contest of ideas” between the “super NDC majority” and the “mini micro NPP minority.”

He pledged that the NDC would prioritize policies that benefit ordinary Ghanaians rather than catering to political cronies.  Dr. Forson concluded his address by reiterating his party’s commitment to championing people-centred governance.

“The people of Ghana have spoken, and indeed, it is finished,” he declared, signalling the end of the NPP’s dominance and the beginning of what he termed a new era of accountability and service to the nation.
