Richard Ahiagba, National Communications Director- NPP

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the NPP, has urged Ghanaians to hold the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the John Mahama Administration accountable for the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians in the recent Obuasi clash.

He emphasized that the NDC, under Mahama’s leadership, failed to take appropriate action in addressing the violence.

Ahiagbah criticized the party for neglecting to inform, caution, or advise its members, many of whom have been involved in taking the law into their own hands.

The NPP stalwart mentioned that these individuals have infiltrated various institutions, asserting that the country’s power dynamics favor them, as the ruling government is in control.

Ahiagbah argued that such actions have only contributed to the escalation of violence and unrest, ultimately leading to the loss of innocent lives.

“Yesterday, 19th January 2025, was a Black Sunday in H.E. John Mahama’s Ghana. It has taken me a lot to wrap my mind around the needless killing of eight or more Ghanaians in Obuasi.

“My condolences to the families, friends, and the larger Obuasi and Ashanti Region. We share in your pain and trauma”.

Richard Ahiagbah

Ahiagbah further lamented that within just 12 days of assuming office, eight precious lives were lost in avoidable killings, all because the NDC failed to take responsibility and address the growing violence among their members.

He expressed outrage, stating that the party’s refusal to heed the urgent calls to bring their rampaging supporters to order directly contributed to the deaths.

Ahiagbah underscored the gravity of the situation, pointing out that these lives are now irreversibly lost due to the NDC’s negligence and inaction.

He noted that the NDC’s inaction is a failure that has had devastating consequences for both the victims and the country as a whole. “No extent of investigation will bring them back to life”.

Ahiagbah also called for unity and consolation as the nation awaits the results of the requested investigation, hoping that those responsible for the cold-blooded murder of these Ghanaians will be brought to justice.

He emphasized the importance of praying for justice for the eight victims from Obuasi.” Rest in peace, my fellow Ghanaians”.

Public Reaction to Obuasi Incident Criticized, Security Risks Raised

Commenting on the Obuasi incident, Samson Lardy Anyenini, a lawyer and media personality, also criticized the public’s reaction, highlighting the disturbing behavior of one individual who claimed to have “escaped unhurt.”

He emphasized that while addressing the harm caused by the state and large corporate miners to their communities is necessary, the boldness exhibited by those involved in such incidents, even when engaging in apparent criminal acts, should serve as a wake-up call for the nation.

Anyenini warned that the country must confront the growing threats posed by illegal mining (galamsey) and related groups, which jeopardize the nation’s security and stability.

“If that public incitement was ignored, it is not difficult to predict what happens to a nation where there are no consequences for wrongdoing.

“You see, those who know better and still encourage or sponsor even the faceless and the cowards running from accountability because of virtual and jurisdictional issues nu, think again”.

Samson Lardi Anyenini

The lawyer further remarked that those who blindly support and give attention to the unprofessional, rumor-mongering, and harmful purveyors of criminal threats and insults masquerading as journalism need to reconsider their actions.

He called on individuals who contribute to the spread of false information and sensationalism for personal gain to reflect on the long-term damage they are causing to the nation.

Anyenini stressed that such irresponsible behavior only fuels division, undermines the integrity of journalism, and disrupts the social fabric, ultimately hindering the country’s progress and stability. “You are never in eternal sanctuary island if your conduct, what you encourage or sponsor bear fruits”.
