John Dumelo is pleading with Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco), to hold on with their demolition plans for another three months.

John Dumelo, a Ghanaian actor turned politician.

Ghanaian award-winning actor and entrepreneur, John Dumelo has pleaded with Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco), to hold on with their demolition plans for another three months.

He made this request on his Twitter page explaining that COVID has badly affected people whose structures will be demolished. Therefore, demolishing their structures in this period will worsen their situation.

“I would like to plead with GRIDco to please suspend the planned demolition exercise especially in Mempasem, American House, and Dzorwulu. COVID has made things tough and my people have nowhere to go now. Please give them at least 3 months to move. I know you have a good heart”.

Some netizens who sighted his post reacted to it. Some thanked him for being the “voice of the voiceless”. Meanwhile, others asked why he was fighting for the same people who didn’t vote for him during the 2020 elections. However, one particular tweep with the name @simplyjohannes intimated that he doesn’t agree with John. His reason for disagreeing with John is that the people who settled there knew exactly what they were up to. However, they still set up their structures on the lines. Therefore, GRIDco must do the needful. Another tweep with the user name @emmanuelfigasty quickly jumped to the defense of Dumelo. He argued that John didn’t plead for them to stay there forever. But, to stay there for an extended period of time. Some reactions from his post read:

GRIDco ANNOUNCES PLANS TO DEMOLISH SOME STRUCTURES IN ACCRA

Meanwhile, Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRDICo) has announced a planned Right-of-Way demolition exercise in parts of Accra. It will be carried out in areas along GRIDCo’s Tema-Achimota-Mallam High Voltage transmission lines. The exercise has been scheduled to take place at the end of March 2021.

GRIDCo, according to a statement released on Tuesday said: “the exercise will rid the areas of illegal occupants and encroachers, whose activities prevent access to the transmission towers”.

Specific portions of the national capital that would be affected are Dzorwulu, Ashiaman Middle East, and areas in East Legon including, American House; Adzei Kodzo, and Menpeasem. The demolition exercise, when completed, will enable “unimpeded access to the transmission towers by GRIDCo Engineers and Contractors in order for construction works to be carried out to ensure adequate and quality power transmission to the Greater Accra region and adjoining areas”.

Year after year, the power transmission company faces challenges with the activities of encroachers along its transmission towers and lands across the country, particularly in Accra. However, the company has assured, it will continue to “work with the relevant state institutions to remove properties and structures and to curb all forms of human activities, within the Right-of-Ways”. This, it said, is to safeguard public safety and ensure the reliability of power transmission.
