Osman Ayariga Esq., the Acting CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), has outlined an ambitious plan to tackle youth unemployment by fostering entrepreneurship, promoting agricultural engagement, and advancing technological skills development.

Speaking on the NYA’s role in addressing the pressing issue of joblessness among young Ghanaians, Osman Ayariga emphasized a multi-faceted approach that integrates sustainability and innovation.

Mr Ayariga highlighted the NYA’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs, equipping young people with the necessary skills to develop their own businesses and sustain their livelihoods.

A key focus of the Authority’s strategy is the promotion of agriculture among the youth, particularly through an initiative dubbed Youth in Green Opportunities (YouGo).

“YouGo will focus on sustainable farming practices, incorporating environmentally friendly techniques such as solar-powered irrigation to make agriculture more viable and attractive”.

He stressed that the initiative is not just about food production but also about preserving the environment and mitigating the effects of illegal mining (galamsey), land degradation, and deforestation.

By integrating modern technology and green energy solutions into farming, Osman Ayariga believes the initiative will offer young people a viable alternative to engaging in environmentally harmful activities. “We need to look at how we can promote environmental sustainability while creating employment opportunities,” he said.

The NYA boss underscored the detrimental effects of galamsey, which has led to severe environmental degradation and loss of arable land.

To counter this, the Authority aims to encourage young people to shift towards environmentally responsible careers in agriculture, thereby reducing the allure of illegal mining.

“We want to build a generation that values environmental conservation; everything now is about going green, and Ghana is no exception,” he remarked. He further emphasized that the focus on green initiatives aligns with Ghana’s broader environmental agenda and global sustainability trends.

Establishing Farm Banks, and Bridging the Digital Divide

Additionally, Osman Ayariga reiterated the NDC’s campaign promise to establish Farm Banks, a strategic intervention aimed at making agriculture more attractive to young people.

These farm banks will provide financial and technical support to youth-led agricultural ventures, ensuring that farming is perceived as a lucrative and sustainable career option.

“The next generation of billionaires will emerge from either technology or agriculture; if you’ve missed the tech wave, then agriculture is the next big thing,” he stated, reinforcing the importance of positioning young people in industries that will drive economic growth.

Recognizing the transformative power of technology, Osman Ayariga echoed President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of training one million youth in coding and programming.

This initiative aims to equip young Ghanaians with essential digital skills to thrive in the fast-evolving global economy.

“The future is digital, and we cannot afford to be left behind. Investing in tech education will open doors to new job opportunities, boost innovation, and drive economic transformation”.

Osman Ayariga’s remarks underscore the NYA’s dedication to fostering economic opportunities for Ghanaian youth through innovation, sustainability, and skills development.

The Authority’s integrated approach—spanning entrepreneurship, agriculture, environmental conservation, and digital transformation—signals a new era of youth empowerment in Ghana.

As the NYA rolls out these initiatives, the challenge will be in ensuring effective implementation, adequate funding, and sustained commitment to addressing the youth unemployment crisis.

The success of these programs will be crucial in shaping Ghana’s future workforce and positioning the country as a leader in sustainable economic development.
