NPP’s Sarpong Defends Minority Leader Amid ECG Scandal

Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong, a staunch NPP loyalist and communicator, has dismissed claims that the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is linked to the disappearance of over 1,300 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at Tema Port.

According to Sarpong, some elements within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are attempting to falsely implicate Afenyo-Markin in the scandal, despite the absence of any evidence.

He claimed that the NDC is falsely attributing to Hon. Afenyo-Markin the statement that the sale of the ECG containers was carried out under “orders from above.”

Accordingly, Sarpong stated emphatically that “Afenyo-Markin has neither uttered such a statement nor written it anywhere.”

He further noted that the committee set up by newly sworn-in Energy Minister John Abdullai Jinapor has completed its fact-finding inquiry and submitted a report on the matter.

However, he pointed out that “nowhere is a board member mentioned in the report.”

The report, according to Sarpong, does not contain any allegations against Afenyo-Markin, who was appointed ECG Board Chairman merely three months before the 2024 general elections.

He argued that it is illogical to associate him with any wrongdoing, stressing that “for the three months he was made the board chairman, he did not award a single contract to any entity.”

Political Vendetta or Legitimate Concerns?

Furthermore, Partick Sarpong believes that Afenyo-Markin is being targeted by the NDC because of his effectiveness as the Minority Leader in Parliament.

He contended that the NDC is using this scandal as a smokescreen to undermine Afenyo-Markin’s political influence.

“We understand these people too well. Afenyo-Markin is sending them through hell. He is too hot for them to handle. He gives them the jitters, hence these fruitless attempts to rope him into the report.”

According to Sarpong, Afenyo-Markin and his “Mighty Minority” have rendered the so-called “super Majority MPs” ineffective, which has made him a prime target for political attacks.

Describing Afenyo-Markin as the “General of the NPP Army in Parliament,” he argued that it was no surprise he had become the primary target of leading NDC figures and their supporters, whom he characterized as easily misled.

He went on to dismiss calls for Afenyo-Markin’s arrest, describing them as baseless and politically motivated rather than driven by any sincere commitment to accountability.

According to him, these demands amounted to nothing more than a futile pursuit, orchestrated by opponents seeking to score political points rather than uphold justice.

NDC Calls for Immediate Arrests

Meanwhile, the NDC has escalated its demands, calling for the immediate arrest of three key figures believed to be connected to the missing ECG containers.

Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, insists that Afenyo-Markin, alongside former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh and former ECG CEO Samuel Dubik Mahama, should be held accountable.

Gbande stated unequivocally that “the Board Chairman, Afenyo-Markin now wants to run away from responsibility, and it is in the interest of the country for him to be arrested immediately.”

He went on to accuse the former leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of engaging in widespread corruption, which he believes contributed significantly to the company’s financial struggles.

According to him, their actions not only drained critical resources but also undermined public trust in the institution.

He, therefore, called for immediate and decisive measures to hold those responsible accountable and to implement stronger oversight mechanisms that would prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“I am calling for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Mahama, and Matthew Opoku Prempeh because we cannot continue to have these instances of corruption, and it is time for us to take action.”

The NDC’s insistence on prosecution and accountability has heightened tensions between the ruling and opposition parties, fueling an ongoing political battle over the ECG scandal.

As the controversy rages on, the Ghanaian public is left questioning whether this issue is a genuine pursuit of accountability or yet another example of partisan political maneuvering.

While the NDC argues that justice must be served, the NPP insists that Afenyo-Markin is being unfairly targeted in a political witch-hunt.

Regardless of where the truth lies, one thing is certain—this case has reignited concerns over corruption, accountability, and the transparency of Ghana’s public institutions.

Whether arrests will be made or not remains to be seen, but the political fallout from the missing ECG containers scandal is far from over.
