A-Plus Denies Corruption Allegations against AG, Apologises

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Hon. Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A-Plus, has denied corruption allegations against the Attorney General and senior colleague Hon. Dr. Dominic Ayine.

The controversy, sparked by a misleading social media post and A-Plus’ own pointed Facebook response, has recently drawn considerable public attention and debate.

Hon. A-Plus stated that the matter stems from two distinct but related events. First was a tweet from a fraudulent Twitter (now X) account impersonated him, which accused the Attorney General of corruption and theft.

Second was his own reaction via a Facebook post, written after the Attorney General, during a press conference, referred to the fake post in response to media queries.

In his official statement, A-Plus categorically denied ever calling the Attorney General corrupt or a thief, emphasizing that such accusations are not only untrue but were made from an impersonation account that he has no control over.

“Although the account bears my name, photograph, and even a verification badge, it is not under my control. As the public is now aware, verification on X can be obtained through a paid subscription, making impersonation easier. The fake account can be accessed via this link: https://x.com/KwameAplus_?t=k8u3Vhui4zIyXt1lBfu0gg&s=09.”

To set the record straight, A-Plus urged the public to refer to his verified Facebook page, where his actual comments regarding the controversial sanitation levy were posted.

He insisted those remarks were measured and devoid of any defamatory language, unlike what the fake account published.

“The impersonator account deliberately distorted my position, seemingly to create confusion and inflame tensions”.

NSS Scandal

Addressing a separate claim made by the Attorney General during the press briefing—one that linked him to an alleged scandal at the National Service Secretariat (NSS)—A-Plus firmly denied any involvement.

“I wish to state unequivocally that I have no knowledge of the matter and no connection to it whatsoever. I have never received any payment from the NSS, nor do I have any business—directly or indirectly—with the Secretariat. I have never contacted anyone to suppress or influence the matter in any way.”

He explained that his only interaction with the issue came in November 2024, when a man who claimed he was being falsely accused approached him for media assistance to clear his name.

A-Plus emphasized that as a media personality and majority shareholder in a local media company—a fact disclosed in his asset declaration—he has often offered such platforms to individuals facing public accusations.

He cited his previous support for government appointees who were prosecuted under past administrations but later cleared by the current Attorney General.

“Everyone who has followed me closely knows that I will be there for you in times of despair. For example, I was one of the people who stood publicly with Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson because I know him to be a man of integrity and believed in his innocence from the very beginning.

“I do not believe there is anything wrong with supporting another individual to tell their side of a story—regardless of their political affiliation.”

He stressed that such support is rooted in his conviction about fairness and not in political favoritism.

Despite the tensions, A-Plus acknowledged the emotional toll the impersonation account may have had on Dr. Ayine and expressed understanding of his frustration.

“Sadly, there is little I can do about the existence or content of that account, which I do not control—though I truly wish I could”.

Crucially, A-Plus admitted that his own Facebook response to the Attorney General’s remarks was not appropriately worded.

“Upon reflection, I acknowledge that the tone and choice of words I used were inappropriate. As a Member of Parliament, a younger colleague, and a junior in the House, I sincerely apologize to Hon. Dr. Ayine and to the general public”.

He took full responsibility for the post and revealed that he had taken the rare step of deleting it as a sign of remorse and respect.

The Gomoa Central MP reiterated his commitment to the national fight against corruption and pledged to pursue this objective with fairness, integrity, and mutual respect.

“Let us move forward in unity and sincerity, with the national interest and the welfare of the Ghanaian people as our ultimate guide”.

Hon. Kwame Asare Obeng’s statement has been widely circulated and has drawn mixed reactions, with some commending him for taking responsibility and clarifying the facts, while others continue to scrutinize the implications of the episode.
