In the age of social media, the definition of a celebrity has evolved dramatically.
Once reserved for individuals who achieved notable success in fields such as film, music, and sports, the term now encompasses a wide array of influencers and content creators, including TikTokers.
However, the rapid rise of TikTok in Ghana has sparked a debate about the legitimacy of these creators as celebrities.
In an exclusive interview with The Vaultz News, Ghanaian artist and analyst, Bismark Paapa Amponsah, popularly known as MIB, has shared his views based on his observation on the growing trends of TikTokers not qualified to be called celebrities.
According to him, some Ghanaian TikTok influencers have gained significant followings and influence, but whether they qualify as “celebrities” depends on how one defines the term.
“If celebrity status is measured by online fame and engagement, then yes, some TikTokers have earned the title. However, if it requires a lasting impact, artistic merit, or significant contribution to society, then not all TikTok influencers may qualify.”

Critics argue that TikTok content lacks depth and longevity, however, the analyst mentioned that TikTok’s short-form format can indeed limit the depth and longevity, but it’s also a platform that thrives on creativity and brevity.
“While some content may lack artistic value, other creators produce high-quality, engaging content that resonates with audiences. Ghanaian creators, like others, have varying levels of skill and artistry.”

MIB also revealed the skills traditional celebrities bring to the table that are often absent in TikTok fame.
“Traditional celebrities often possess skills honed through formal training or years of experience, such as acting, singing, or dancing. They also bring cultural significance, influencing societal norms and values. TikTok fame, on the other hand, can be more fleeting and based on virality rather than artistic merit.”

The fame that TikTokers in Ghana experience is often superficial and fleeting. Unlike traditional celebrities who have built their careers over years through hard work and dedication, many TikTokers achieve viral fame overnight due to a single video.
This phenomenon raises questions about the sustainability of their popularity. For instance, a TikToker gain millions of views for a humorous skit or dance challenge, but this success is rarely indicative of long-term talent or influence.
The nature of TikTok encourages trends that vanishes as quickly as they appear, leading to a cycle of fleeting fame that lacks the depth associated with true celebrity status.
Lack of Substantial Contributions of Ghanaian TikTokers

The contributions of Ghanaian TikTokers to society are often minimal. While some creators use their platforms to address important social issues or promote positive messages, the majority focus on entertainment that lacks substance.
The content produced tends to revolve around dance challenges, lip-syncing, and comedic skits that, while entertaining, do not contribute to societal progress or cultural enrichment.
Unlike established celebrities who often engage in philanthropy or activism, many TikTokers prioritize virality over meaningful engagement.
This raises the question: can individuals who primarily entertain without contributing to societal development truly be considered celebrities?
However, Bismark explained how TikTokers can evolve or transition to earn long-term relevance or a more traditional form of celebrity status.
“TikTokers can diversify their content, explore other platforms or mediums, and engage in meaningful conversations to build a loyal audience. They can also focus on creating content with lasting value, such as educational or inspirational content.”

He also revealed that the current debate about TikTokers and celebrity reflects a shift in values, with some prioritizing traditional notions of celebrity status and others embracing new forms of influence and fame. “It highlights the complexities of defining celebrity status in the digital age,” he added.
Additionally, the ephemeral nature of TikTok content further undermines the legitimacy of its creators as celebrities. TikTok videos are designed for quick consumption, often lasting only a few seconds to a minute.

This format fosters a culture of instant gratification, where viewers consume content without forming lasting connections with the creators.
In contrast, traditional celebrities often have a body of work that showcases their skills and allows audiences to develop a deeper appreciation for their artistry.
The rapid-fire nature of TikTok content means that creators are constantly chasing the next trend, leading to a lack of depth in their work and a diminished sense of legacy.
He advised young Ghanaians seeking fame through platforms like TikTok to focus on creating value, whether through entertainment, education, or inspiration. “Build a loyal audience by being authentic, engaging, consistent, and don’t rely solely on vitality, but strive for long-term relevance,” MIB stated.
MIB disclosed that Nana Romeo’s and Mona Gucci’s critique is valid in highlighting the importance of impact, legacy, and societal contribution.
“However, it may also be seen as elitist if it dismissed the value of TikTok fame altogether. Ultimately, the definition of ‘celebrity’ is evolving, and both traditional and new forms of fame have their merits.”

While Ghanaian TikTokers enjoy a level of fame and recognition, it is essential to critically evaluate what it means to be a celebrity in today’s digital age.
The superficial nature of their fame, the lack of substantial contributions to society, and the ephemeral quality of their content all point to the conclusion that no Ghanaian TikToker truly deserves the title of celebrity.
As this new landscape of social media is navigated, it is crucial to distinguish between fleeting fame and the enduring legacy of true celebrities who have made significant impacts in their fields and communities.
Only by recognizing this distinction Ghanaians foster a more meaningful understanding of celebrity culture in Ghana and beyond.
