The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced the commencement of critical works on the 330kV Takoradi-Thermal-Anwomaso Transmission Line as part of efforts to bring a newly constructed power generation plant in Kumasi into operation.

The exercise forms a key stage in integrating additional generation capacity into Ghana’s national power system to improve supply reliability in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

“The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the public, particularly residents of Kumasi and surrounding communities, that AKSA Energy is undertaking works to bring its newly constructed power generation plant at Anwomaso, Kumasi, into operation.”

According to GRIDCo, the Anwomaso power plant will play a significant role in enhancing electricity supply in the Ashanti Region, which remains one of Ghana’s largest demand centers due to its growing population, commercial activity and industrial base.

“The new plant, when fully commissioned, will provide additional generation capacity to serve consumers and significantly improve power supply reliability in Kumasi and adjoining areas.”

Energy sector analysts say the addition of new generation capacity closer to major load centers such as Kumasi helps reduce transmission losses and improves voltage stability, ultimately benefiting consumers through fewer outages and better-quality power.

GRIDCo cautioned that the ongoing works could result in a temporary interruption in electricity supply to some customers as engineers carry out the safe termination and integration of the new substation into the national grid.

The exercise involves connecting the AKSA Anwomaso Generating Plant to the National Interconnected Transmission System via the 330kV Takoradi-Thermal-Anwomaso Transmission Line.

“The activity may, regrettably, require a temporary interruption in power supply to some customers for approximately three (3) hours to enable the safe termination and integration of the new substation.”

GRIDCo said power supply to all affected customers is expected to be fully restored by 11:00 p.m. on the same day. The company emphasized that the timing of the works was carefully planned to balance technical requirements with the need to limit inconvenience to consumers.

The company appealed to residents and businesses in Kumasi and nearby communities to exercise patience and understanding, stressing that the short-term inconvenience is necessary to deliver long-term improvements in power reliability.

GRIDCo offered an appeal to customers who may be affected by the temporary interruption, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a stable and resilient power transmission system.

“GRIDCo sincerely apologises for any inconvenience this interruption may cause and assures the public that the works are necessary to enhance the stability and reliability of power supply in all the affected areas.”

The assurance comes amid heightened public attention on power supply reliability, particularly as demand continues to grow across the country.

GRIDCo, which describes itself as the backbone of power delivery in Ghana, plays a central role in transmitting electricity from power producers to distribution utilities and bulk customers across the country and the West African sub-region.

GRIDCo currently operates the National Interconnected Transmission System and transmits electricity from 11 wholesale suppliers, including VRA, to 31 bulk customers and distribution utilities.

The connection of the Anwomaso power plant is part of broader efforts to reinforce Ghana’s transmission network and ensure that new generation capacity is effectively absorbed into the system. GRIDCo says such projects are critical to meeting rising demand while maintaining grid stability.

As works progress, the successful integration of the AKSA Anwomaso Generating Plant is expected to mark another step forward in strengthening electricity supply in Kumasi and supporting Ghana’s wider energy security objectives.
