Freddie Blay, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has disclosed that the party’s decision to lift the suspension Kwabena Agyei Agyepong was as a result of a consensus from the members of the National Executive Council (NEC).

Board Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Freddie Blay.

Freddie Blay, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has disclosed that the party’s decision to lift the suspension on Kwabena Agyei Agyepong was as a result of a consensus from the members of the National Executive Council (NEC).

According to him, their decision was based on thorough work undertaken by the Council to reinstate the former General Secretary of the party.

“It is a decision that was taken at the NEC meeting yesterday. After a long discussion, it was decided that he must be reinstated as a full member of the party.

“A lot of people expressed their opinions on that so it was a very fruitful discussion and after that, it was unanimous that he must be reinstated”.

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong along with the former National Chair, Paul Afoko and his Vice, Sammy Crabbe were suspended for violating Article 3(d) of the party’s Constitution after engaging in some misconduct in 2015.

Mr Agyepong was subsequently accused of taking unilateral actions and activities without the Council’s approval. This, led to his suspension for six years until after the party’s Council withdrew his suspension.

Kwabena Agyepong requested reinstatement

According to the NPP National Chairman, Kwabena Agyepong was supportive during the 2020 general elections.  This, he explained, was one of the reasons the Council considered to have his suspension lifted.

Additionally, he opined that, the Council was convinced to have him re-instated after. Mr. Blay insisted that the Council’s decision was influenced after receiving a letter in February this year from the Kwabena Agyepong.

“He wrote a letter to us that he be re-instated. Let us be fair to ourselves, he has been on suspension for about 6 years. The decision to even confirm that he should be in or out of the party was not an issue. Because he has been doing a lot of things to help the party – going on campaigns. He has been helping some constituents. For that reason, the party decided that he being re-instated is most appropriate”.

According to Mr Blay, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong will enjoy every rights and privileges due him as a former party executive. He further urged him to remain loyal and committed to the governing NPP following his reinstatement.

“We expect his commitment to the party, his loyal service to the party and whatever position that he finds himself. He will fight to raise the reputation and image of the party”.

NEC lifts suspension off Kwabena Agyepong

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), lifted suspension off its former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong on Tuesday May 11,2021. This was after the Council held a meeting to deliberate his matter.

The lifting of the suspension restores him as a member of the party’s NEC, Steering Committee, and the National Council according to the party’s constitution.

Responding to the suspension then, Kwabena Agyepong stated that they were intended or unintended attempts to “impugn” his reputation and tarnish his “good name.”

That notwithstanding, Kwabena Agyepong assisted in helping President Akufo-Addo’s political ambition, despite his suspension. He achieved this by touring all the 16 regions of the country with the President during the 2020 election campaign.
