The Arsenal Football Club have emerged as the Premier League champions after Manchester City were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday night.

The result officially handed Mikel Arteta’s side the league title with one game still left to play, bringing an end to years of frustration and near misses for the North London club.

Manchester City needed a victory to keep the title race alive heading into the final day of the season, but Bournemouth produced a spirited performance to deny the reigning champions all three points.

French youngster Eli Junior Kroupi gave the Cherries the lead in the first half with a brilliant curling effort just from outside the penalty box.

Pep Guardiola’s side pushed relentlessly for an equalizer and eventually found one deep into stoppage time through Erling Haaland, whose late strike rescued a point for the visitors.

However, the equalizer proved insufficient as the draw left City (78 points) four points behind Arsenal (82 points) with only one match remaining, mathematically confirming the Gunners as champions.

The triumph marks Arsenal’s first Premier League title since the 2003/2004 season when Arsène Wenger’s legendary side went “Invincibles”, completing the entire league season unbeaten.

It also marks the club’s 14th English league crown, placing them behind only Manchester United and Liverpool, who both have 20 league titles.

For Mikel Arteta, the achievement is a defining moment in his managerial career. Since taking charge of Arsenal, the Spaniard has overseen a gradual rebuilding process that transformed the club from top-four hopefuls into genuine title contenders.

After the final whistle at the Vitality Stadium, outgoing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola showed class in defeat by congratulating Arsenal and his former assistant Arteta on their success. “Congratulations to Arsenal, Mikel Arteta and his staff for winning the title. They deserve it,” Guardiola said after the game.

The City boss also admitted disappointment that his side failed to force the title race into a dramatic final-day showdown.

Arteta and Arsenal Finally End Years of Near Misses

For the past three seasons, Arsenal have repeatedly come close to winning the Premier League only to fall short at crucial moments. During the 2022/23 campaign, the Gunners spent much of the season at the top of the table before collapsing in the closing stages and surrendering the title to Manchester City.

A similar story unfolded in the 2023/24 season when Arsenal again mounted a serious challenge but narrowly lost out to Guardiola’s dominant City side in last minutes.

Last season brought further heartbreak as Liverpool emerged champions while Arsenal once again finished behind despite leading the standings for significant periods of the campaign.

Those disappointments led to growing criticism that Arteta’s side lacked the mentality needed to get over the line. Questions were raised whenever Arsenal dropped points this season, especially during a difficult run midway through the campaign that threatened to derail their title ambitions.

This time, however, the Gunners showed resilience and maturity. Key victories against Newcastle United, West Ham United and Burnley in the final weeks of the season allowed them to maintain their advantage over City and finally end their long wait for Premier League glory.

The title victory has already sparked massive celebrations among the Arsenal players and supporters around the world, many of whom have waited over two decades to witness another league triumph.

Attention will now turn to the final day of the campaign, which effectively becomes a coronation for Arsenal. Arteta’s men will travel to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park knowing the trophy is already secured.
