UBA Targets Africa’s Next Fintech Revolution

UBA Targets Africa’s Next Fintech Revolution

United Bank for Africa (UBA) has declared that Africa is standing on the brink of its next great fintech revolution, urging banks, fintech firms, regulators, investors, and policymakers to join forces to unlock the continent’s enormous economic potential.

Speaking at the UBA X Fintech Conference 2026, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Ghana, Bernard Gyebi, described the gathering as more than just a technology conference. According to him, it is a platform for shaping the future of financial services across Africa through innovation, strategic partnerships, and bold leadership.

He noted that Africa’s digital transformation is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, driven by a youthful population, growing smartphone adoption, expanding digital infrastructure, and increasing demand for financial inclusion.

“The future of financial services will increasingly be shaped by Africa,” he said, highlighting how innovations in digital payments, lending platforms, artificial intelligence, data analytics, embedded finance, and blockchain technologies are changing the way financial services are delivered and consumed.

The End of Banks Versus Fintechs

One of the strongest messages delivered at the conference came from UBA Ghana Board Member, Linda Naa Dzama, who stated that the era of competition between banks and fintech companies is over.

For years, traditional banks and fintech firms were often viewed as rivals competing for the same customers. However, she stressed that the future belongs to collaboration rather than confrontation.

“The future is no longer banks versus fintechs. The future is banks with fintechs,” she declared.

According to her, combining the scale, trust, regulatory expertise, and financial strength of banks with the agility, creativity, and innovation of fintech companies can unlock opportunities that neither side could achieve independently.

This shift in mindset is expected to redefine financial services across the continent, opening doors to faster payments, broader financial access, improved customer experiences, and stronger support for businesses and entrepreneurs.

Africa Emerging as a Global Fintech Powerhouse

The conference highlighted Africa’s rapid emergence as one of the world’s most exciting fintech markets.

Industry reports continue to show strong investor interest in African fintech companies, with the sector becoming a major driver of financial inclusion and economic growth.

Ghana was singled out as one of West Africa’s most dynamic fintech hubs, thanks to a growing ecosystem of innovators, payment providers, digital lenders, and technology-driven financial service companies.

Beyond Ghana, several African countries are setting global benchmarks in financial innovation. Nigeria has demonstrated remarkable scale in digital payments, Kenya continues to lead in mobile money innovation, while South Africa remains at the forefront of open banking and financial technology infrastructure.

Together, these developments are positioning Africa as a serious contender in the global financial technology landscape.

AfCFTA Presents a Trillion-Dollar Opportunity

A major focus of the conference was the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which represents one of the largest economic integration projects in modern history.

With a market exceeding 1.3 billion people, AfCFTA has the potential to transform trade and investment across the continent. However, speakers emphasized that financial integration must accompany economic integration for the initiative to achieve its full potential.

Many African businesses still struggle with expensive cross-border transactions, currency conversion challenges, and lengthy settlement periods. These obstacles continue to limit trade and reduce competitiveness.

Conference participants argued that stronger partnerships between banks, fintech companies, and regulators can help eliminate these barriers by creating payment systems that are faster, cheaper, and more accessible across African markets.

UBA Positions Itself at the Center of Transformation

UBA used the conference to showcase its ambitions to play a leading role in Africa’s financial future.

As Africa’s Global Bank, UBA operates in 20 African countries and maintains international operations in New York, London, Paris, and Dubai. This extensive network places the institution in a strategic position to facilitate trade, investment, and financial connectivity across borders.

The bank revealed that it has invested heavily in fintech partnerships, open banking infrastructure, application programming interfaces (APIs), and digital payment solutions designed to support innovation and scalability.

UBA believes that these investments will help accelerate financial inclusion while enabling businesses and consumers to access more efficient financial services.

Cybersecurity and AI Take Center Stage

As digital finance expands, conference speakers also emphasized the need for stronger cybersecurity frameworks and responsible deployment of artificial intelligence.

The rise of digital ecosystems brings significant opportunities, but it also introduces new risks. Industry leaders called for increased collaboration to strengthen digital trust, improve customer protection, and ensure the resilience of financial systems.

Artificial intelligence was identified as one of the technologies that will have the greatest impact on banking and financial services over the coming decade, helping institutions improve efficiency, personalize services, and make data-driven decisions.

Building Africa’s Financial Future Together

The overriding message from the UBA X Fintech Conference 2026 was clear: Africa’s next fintech revolution will not be driven by any single institution.

Rather, it will be built through partnerships that unite banks, fintechs, regulators, technology providers, investors, and development partners around a shared vision.

As the continent races toward greater digital transformation and economic integration, collaboration may prove to be Africa’s most valuable asset.

With fintech innovation gathering momentum and institutions such as UBA championing cross-sector partnerships, the stage appears set for a new era that could redefine financial services and unlock unprecedented opportunities for millions of Africans.
