Turkiye’s return to the FIFA World Cup after a 24-year absence ended in disappointment as the Crescent-Stars were eliminated from the 2026 tournament following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Paraguay in their second Group D match.

Heading into the encounter, Vincenzo Montella’s side knew that avoiding defeat was essential to keeping their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 alive. However, an early setback proved decisive as Paraguay struck within the opening two minutes and held on for a crucial victory.

Midfielder Matias Galarza scored the only goal of the game, capitalizing on a bright start by La Albirroja. The South Americans bounced back impressively after suffering defeat to co-hosts the United States in their opening fixture, while Turkiye were left searching for answers in front of goal once again.

The result leaves Turkiye without a point or a goal after two matches and confirms their exit from the competition before they even play their final group game against the United States.

Early Blow Proves Costly

Paraguay could hardly have wished for a better start. Galarza’s strike inside the opening moments immediately put Turkiye under pressure and forced them to chase the game for the remainder of the contest. I’m

The South Americans were later reduced to ten men when winger Miguel Almirón was sent off shortly before halftime. It marked the second consecutive match in which Paraguay finished with a numerical disadvantage, yet this time, they displayed tremendous resilience to protect their lead.

Despite enjoying a man advantage for the entire second half and playing 32 shots in the game, Turkiye struggled to convert possession and shots into goals. Their attacking frustrations, which had already been evident in their opening match against Australia, resurfaced at the worst possible moment.

The tournament’s revised tiebreaker rules also worked against them. With head-to-head results taking precedence over goal difference, defeats against both Australia and Paraguay meant there was no mathematical path to qualification regardless of what happens in the final round of group fixtures.

The outcome also guaranteed the United States top spot in Group D with six points from two matches. Australia and Paraguay both own head-to-head victories over Turkiye, ensuring the European nation cannot climb above either side in the standings.

Guler Offers Honest Apology

Following the final whistle, Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler did not hide his disappointment as he reflected on Turkiye’s underwhelming campaign.

The talented playmaker, who arrived at the tournament carrying the hopes of an entire nation, admitted the team’s performances had fallen far below expectations.

“We want to apologize, we feel ashamed. We all play for top clubs and we should do way better on this competition. In two games, we scored zero goals and it’s not acceptable.”

The 21-year-old also dismissed speculation that internal problems within the squad contributed to their early exit. “There was no issue between us in the dressing room. Not at all. We just couldn’t score goals. That’s it.”

For Güler, the experience has been particularly painful given the excitement surrounding his first World Cup appearance. “In my career with the national team, I will do everything possible to forget this World Cup,” he added.

Montella Frustrated by Goal Drought

Head coach Vincenzo Montella shared his frustration after watching his Turkiye side fail to score for the second consecutive match despite creating numerous opportunities.

Turkiye’s inability to find the back of the net has been one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. A squad packed with attacking talent repeatedly threatened but lacked the finishing touch required at the highest level.

Montella pointed to the remarkable number of chances his team had created across their two matches, expressing disbelief that none had resulted in goals. “We had 65 shots in 2 games. Zero goals. If I have to learn how to let the ball enter, here I’m for it,” the Italian coach remarked.

The statistics underline the story of Turkiye’s campaign. While their build-up play and chance creation often looked promising, their finishing let them down when it mattered most.

Their World Cup return was supposed to mark a new chapter for a talented generation led by Güler and Yildiz. Instead, it ends with an early exit, no goals scored, and plenty of questions about how a side capable of producing so many opportunities failed to convert any of them.

Turkiye will now turn their attention to rebuilding ahead of future international competitions, hoping the painful lessons of 2026 can serve as motivation for a stronger return to the global stage.
