Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup, overturning a two goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2 in a thrilling round of 16 encounter in Atlanta and keep their title defence alive.
Trailing by two goals with just over 12 minutes remaining, La Albiceleste looked destined for a shock elimination before a remarkable late surge saw them score three unanswered goals to book their place in the quarter finals.
Egypt appeared on course for a historic first ever FIFA World Cup quarter final after a disciplined and clinical display put the African side firmly in control for much of the contest. However, Argentina’s experience, quality and relentless pressure ultimately proved decisive in the closing stages.
The victory extends Argentina’s quest for a fourth FIFA World Cup title and keeps Lionel Messi’s dream of defending the trophy alive as the reigning champions continue their march through the tournament.
Egypt Dream of Historic Quarter Final
Egypt made the brighter start and were rewarded in the first half when defender Yasser Ibrahim rose highest inside the penalty area to power home a header, giving the Pharaohs a deserved lead in the 15th minute and sending their supporters into wild celebrations.

Argentina were handed a golden opportunity to respond shortly afterwards when they were awarded a penalty. Lionel Messi stepped up looking to restore parity, but goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir produced a superb save, diving the right way to deny the Argentine captain. It was Messi’s second missed penalty of the tournament and left the defending champions facing an uphill battle.
The Pharaohs continued to frustrate Argentina with an organised defensive display before extending their advantage midway through the second half. Zico finished clinically to make it 2-0, leaving Argentina staring at an unlikely exit from the competition.
With confidence flowing through the Egyptian side, the prospect of a famous victory appeared within touching distance as they maintained their composure against the South American giants.
Argentina’s Stunning Late Revival
Argentina finally found a breakthrough in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero powered home a header to halve the deficit and inject fresh belief into Lionel Scaloni’s side.
The goal transformed the momentum of the match. Five minutes later, Messi redeemed himself with a spectacular equaliser, unleashing a powerful effort that struck the underside of the crossbar before bouncing over the line to make it 2-2.

With Egypt pushing forward in search of a late winner, Argentina exploited the spaces left behind. In the 89th minute, Lautaro Martínez delivered an inviting cross that found Enzo Fernández, whose well directed header completed an astonishing comeback and gave Argentina the lead for the first time in the match.
The dramatic turnaround stunned the Egyptian players and supporters, who had looked set to celebrate one of the greatest victories in their football history only minutes earlier.
Controversy and Messi’s Historic Milestone
The decisive goal was not without controversy. Several Egyptian players immediately surrounded the referee, claiming Mohamed Salah had been fouled in the build up to Argentina’s counter attack. Their appeals were dismissed, with the match officials allowing the goal to stand.
The protests continued, prompting the referee to issue yellow cards to three Egyptian players as well as members of the team’s technical bench for their dissent.
Messi’s equaliser carried added significance beyond helping Argentina complete the comeback. The strike was his eighth goal of the tournament, moving him to the top of the Adidas Golden Boot standings, one clear of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, while placing him two goals ahead of England captain Harry Kane.

The Argentine legend also reached another remarkable landmark by becoming the first player to score in his eight consecutive FIFA World Cup matches, a run stretching back to the final three matches of the 2022 tournament in Qatar. His latest goal further strengthened his place among the greatest performers in World Cup history.
For Egypt, the defeat was a heartbreaking end to an impressive campaign that had brought them within touching distance of a first ever World Cup quarter final. Despite the disappointment, their spirited performances throughout the tournament underlined their growing status on the global stage.
Argentina, meanwhile, survived one of the toughest tests of their title defence. After displaying resilience, character and clinical finishing when it mattered most, the reigning champions now turn their attention to the quarter finals, where they will face either Switzerland or Colombia as they continue their pursuit of a fourth FIFA World Cup crown.
