VGMA Ghanaian gospel artist, Diana Hamilton has emerged as the ultimate winner at the just ended Vodafone Ghana Music Awards as she bagged the 'Artist of the year' award.

Being crowned VGMA ‘Artist of the year’ comes with its own pressure as “to whom much is given, much is expected”. However, Diana Hamilton has indicated that there is no pressure on her even though she is VGMA’s “Artist of the year”.

Speaking in an interview, Diana noted that she and her team will continue to do exactly what they’ve been doing over the years. According to her, it is the same things they have been doing that have brought her this far, therefore there is no need to put pressure on herself and her team just because she is now the artist of the year.

“I do not put pressure on myself. I have someone who tells me what to do, His name is Jesus. There is no pressure. It’s just a responsibility. As much as we are doing this, God has other people he is bringing up. Never ever think that God has lost workers”.

Meanwhile, several assertions are being made about the dominance of secular acts in the award scheme, coupled with the limited slots or nominations given to gospel musicians. For many, gospel artists fail to meet the standards needed for winning most of the prices including “Artiste of the Year” award, thereby giving secular musicians bigger opportunities to win these prizes.

Speaking on the back of this, Diana Hamilton urged stakeholders in the music industry not to perceive the VGMA as a scheme designed to honor only secular musicians. The ‘Adom’ hitmaker, emphasized that it is essential to recognize the VGMA as a platform for all genres of music.

The 2021 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is underway. The two-day event has already kicked off with electric performances from Yaa Yaa, Okyeame Kwame, Cina Soul, Kofi Kinaata among others.

“It is a corporate scheme, it’s not a secular scheme. It is a scheme that is awarding everybody in their field of work and so gospel deserves to be there”.

“On the night, there was a gentleman who sat in front of me and that was the first time he heard the song ‘Adom’. We thought Adom had done what it could but if not for anything, we won a soul, and just by doing VGMA, all the figures are going up and that’s our way of proclaiming the gospel”.

That notwithstanding, Diana Hamilton also urged Ghanaians to congratulate Kidi for winning four awards at this year’s award event. She noted that KiDi deserves to be celebrated rather than being trolled for his “I will be back” comment.

“When you’re nervous, you say things. Let’s go easy on the gentleman. I think he’s acted as a fine gentleman. He picked four awards so, let’s congratulate him on that. I even saw videos of him giving me a standing ovation when I was announced as the winner of the award”.

Meanwhile, Kidi who was also present during the interview stated that he does not regret anything that happened on Saturday at the awards ceremony. He also applauded Diana Hamilton again for emerging victorious.

“I don’t regret anything that happened that night, nothing. I am only disappointed but not angry at all. Because like I said I believe in the will of God. And it was the will of God that it happened that way”.
