U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a new commission focused on improving the lives of military spouses and their families, saying the initiative will develop recommendations to address a broad range of challenges faced by those supporting America’s service members.
The executive order creates the Presidential Military Spouse Commission, which Trump said will be chaired by Jennifer Hegseth, the wife of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The commission will examine issues affecting military families and propose solutions to improve their quality of life.
Announcing the initiative, Trump said the commission would focus on some of the most pressing concerns confronting military spouses, many of whom relocate frequently as part of military assignments and often face disruptions to employment, education and access to services. “The commission will develop suggestions to address particular challenges in housing, employment, health care, education, child childcare and just about everything else you can think of,” Trump said.
The U.S President described the commission as part of the administration’s broader effort to support military personnel by also addressing the needs of their families, whose well-being is often closely tied to the readiness and stability of the armed forces.
According to the executive order, the Presidential Military Spouse Commission will serve as an advisory body tasked with identifying barriers faced by military spouses and recommending policies that could improve access to housing, employment opportunities, healthcare, education and childcare.
Military families often experience unique challenges because of the frequent relocations required during military service. Spouses may have to leave jobs when service members are reassigned, children often change schools multiple times, and families can face difficulties accessing consistent healthcare and childcare services.
Employment has remained one of the most significant concerns for military spouses, many of whom encounter interruptions to their careers because of repeated moves between states or overseas postings. Professional licensing requirements that vary from one jurisdiction to another have also been cited as obstacles for spouses working in fields such as education, healthcare and law.
Housing affordability and availability near military installations have likewise remained recurring concerns, particularly as rising living costs have affected many communities across the United States.
Trump announced that Jennifer Hegseth will lead the newly established commission, placing her in a role traditionally associated with advocacy for military families by spouses of senior Defense Department officials.
Although the commission is new, the role itself follows a longstanding practice in which spouses of defense secretaries have championed programmes supporting military families and veterans. Jennifer Hegseth’s appointment mirrors the work undertaken by previous Defense Secretary spouses who have promoted education, family welfare and community support initiatives within the military.
Charlene Austin, the wife of former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, served on the advisory boards of both the Purdue Military Family Research Institute and the Military Child Education Coalition. Through those organisations, she supported research and programmes aimed at improving educational outcomes and family support services for military households.
Successive administrations have also introduced initiatives addressing military spouse employment, childcare access and healthcare services, recognising that family stability contributes to military readiness and retention.
Building on Existing Efforts
Many of the priorities outlined by Trump have been the subject of bipartisan efforts over several administrations. Federal agencies, Congress and nonprofit organisations have implemented programmes designed to improve employment opportunities for military spouses, expand childcare services and simplify occupational licensing requirements across states.
The new commission is expected to review those existing efforts while identifying additional recommendations for the administration to consider. The White House has not yet announced the commission’s full membership or provided a timeline for when it is expected to submit its recommendations. It also remains unclear whether the panel’s proposals will require executive action, legislative approval or collaboration with the Department of Defense and other federal agencies.
Military advocacy groups have long argued that supporting spouses and children is essential to maintaining the overall well-being of service members. Frequent deployments, relocations and extended periods of separation can create financial, emotional and educational challenges for military households, making family-focused policies an important aspect of defence planning.
The establishment of the Presidential Military Spouse Commission signals the administration’s intention to place renewed attention on those issues. By bringing together recommendations on housing, employment, healthcare, education and childcare, the panel is expected to provide guidance on ways to strengthen support systems for military families across the country.
While many of the challenges identified by Trump have been addressed through previous government initiatives, the commission is expected to assess where further improvements can be made and recommend additional measures to better serve military spouses.
As the commission begins its work under Jennifer Hegseth’s leadership, its recommendations are likely to contribute to ongoing discussions about how best to support the families of the men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces.
