The Ministry of Health has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent unrest at the Nursing Training College, Techiman-Krobo, as government moves to establish the facts, assess compliance with institutional procedures and recommend measures to prevent future disturbances.

The committee, chaired by Prof. Vida Nyagre Yekong, has been tasked to probe the events that triggered the unrest, review whether existing policies, codes of conduct and administrative procedures were followed, and submit a comprehensive report with recommendations to the Minister for Health by 11 August 2026.

The Ministry indicated that the investigation forms part of government’s commitment to ensuring accountability, transparency and adherence to established institutional procedures within health training institutions across the country.

According to the statement, the committee has been mandated to establish the facts surrounding the incident and identify the underlying issues that resulted in the unrest.

The Ministry expects the findings to provide a factual basis for any administrative decisions and future interventions aimed at strengthening governance within the institution.

The seven-member committee draws membership from key institutions within Ghana’s health, education and public administration sectors.

The Ministry said the composition of the committee reflects a multidisciplinary approach intended to ensure an objective, comprehensive and credible investigation.

“The committee is expected to establish the facts surrounding the issues which led to the unrest in the school, review and determine whether existing policies, code of conduct and administrative procedures have been complied with, and make recommendations to the Minister for Health for appropriate action.”

Review to Examine Institutional Compliance

Beyond establishing the immediate causes of the unrest, the committee has been directed to examine whether institutional regulations, administrative procedures and codes of conduct were adhered to before and during the incident.

The review is expected to assess the effectiveness of existing governance structures and identify any procedural gaps requiring corrective action.

The Ministry believes such an assessment will help strengthen accountability mechanisms within health training institutions while ensuring that disputes are managed through established administrative processes.

The findings are also expected to inform future policy decisions aimed at improving institutional management and maintaining discipline across nursing and midwifery training colleges. To ensure a timely resolution of the matter, the committee has been given a clear timeline to complete its work.

The report is expected to contain findings on the circumstances surrounding the unrest, an assessment of institutional compliance with existing regulations and recommendations for appropriate administrative action. Government is expected to rely on the committee’s report in determining the next course of action regarding the incident.

Strengthening Governance in Health Training Institutions

The establishment of the investigative committee underscores the Ministry of Health’s commitment to promoting effective governance, accountability and stability within Ghana’s health training institutions.

Nursing and midwifery training colleges play a critical role in producing the skilled workforce required to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide. As such, maintaining orderly academic environments and ensuring adherence to institutional regulations remain central to government’s broader efforts to improve health professional education.
