Sports and Recreation Minister Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams believes the Tour du Ghana can become a major sports tourism attraction for Ghana, while urging corporate Ghana to invest in cycling as a long-term economic opportunity.
This year edition of the cycling competition is slated for August 28 and 29 with the cyclists riding from Accra through Kwahu to Kumasi.
Speaking at the official launch of the sixth edition of the 3FM Tour du Ghana, Hon. Adams said cycling has the potential to become more than a competitive sport, with the right investment capable of positioning Ghana as an attractive destination for sports tourism.
The Minister believes the Tour du Ghana can evolve into an internationally recognised event that draws cyclists and tourists from across the world. He pointed to the country’s diverse terrain and cultural heritage as assets that could give the race a unique identity on the international calendar.
Rather than focusing solely on the sporting spectacle, Kofi Adams said the event should be developed around a broader tourism experience. Participants could ride through Ghana’s mountains, coastlines, valleys and historic communities while experiencing the country’s culture and supporting businesses along the routes.
He also stressed the importance of corporate involvement at an early stage, arguing that sustained investment would be necessary to grow the sport’s audience, infrastructure and commercial appeal. According to him, cycling offers opportunities that extend well beyond the riders and teams competing in the race.
The launch brought together representatives from the sports sector, corporate Ghana, the media and the cycling fraternity, reflecting the growing interest in using the Tour du Ghana as a platform for promoting the sport and its wider economic potential.
From Cycling Race to Tourism Product
Hon. Kofi Adams envisages that the Tour du Ghana can become one of Ghana’s major sports tourism properties if it is deliberately packaged and marketed to an international audience.
He drew comparisons with established international cycling events, particularly the Tour de France, while acknowledging that Ghana could develop its own identity around the country’s landscape, history and culture. “The mountains, coastlines, valleys, and lively communities across Ghana provide a stunning backdrop for a world-class cycling tour,” he said.
The Minister argued that international visitors who travel to Ghana for the race would spend money across several parts of the economy. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, retailers and small businesses along the race routes could all benefit from increased activity.
He therefore sees investment in cycling as an opportunity to combine sporting development with tourism promotion and local economic growth. The long-term ambition, he suggested, should be to make the Tour an event that people travel to Ghana specifically to experience.

His vision also places responsibility on stakeholders to build the event beyond a once-a-year competition. Greater corporate backing, improved organisation and stronger international promotion would be required if the Tour du Ghana is to compete for attention with established cycling events elsewhere.
Partnership Key to Sustainable Growth
Hon. Kofi Adams also highlighted the partnership between Media General and the Ghana Cycling Federation as an example of the collaboration required to develop cycling sustainably.
He said government alone could not provide everything needed to grow the sport, making cooperation between public institutions, sporting federations, businesses and the media essential.
According to the Minister, Media General’s platforms, resources and expertise, combined with the Ghana Cycling Federation’s technical knowledge, provide a foundation for building a stronger cycling ecosystem.
The call to corporate Ghana is therefore not simply for sponsorship of the sixth edition of the Tour du Ghana. Mr Adams wants businesses to see cycling as a long-term investment capable of delivering benefits in health promotion, youth development, tourism, sustainability and economic activity.
The challenge now is to convert that vision into a commercially viable and professionally managed property. If the Tour du Ghana can consistently attract quality riders, spectators, sponsors and international visitors, it could become one of the country’s most valuable sports tourism events.
For Ghana’s cycling community, the sixth edition could consequently represent more than another race. It could be a step towards establishing cycling as a significant contributor to the country’s sporting and tourism economy.
