The Secretary-General of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, Dr. Hyunik Hong, has led a delegation to Ghana to formally present the Korea-Ghana Heritage Project to the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and officials of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, marking a new phase in cooperation between the two countries on heritage conservation and climate resilience.

The presentation, held in Accra, brought together the visiting Korean delegation, representatives of the Ministry of Education and officials of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO for detailed discussions on the scope of the project and the areas in which the two countries intend to collaborate over the coming years.

The initiative, themed “Empowering Climate Action, Strengthening Ghana’s Integrated Capacity for Climate Change Response in Heritage Conservation,” is designed to run over a four-year period, from 2026 to 2030.

According to the delegation, its core objective is to build Ghana’s institutional and technical capacity to respond effectively to the growing threats posed by climate change to the country’s cultural and natural heritage sites.

Officials say the project reflects a recognition that heritage conservation can no longer be treated in isolation from broader climate concerns, given the increasing vulnerability of historical and natural sites to environmental pressures such as erosion, flooding and shifting weather patterns.

“This project is about equipping Ghana with the tools and expertise needed to protect its heritage in the face of a changing climate.”

Discussions Explore Areas of Collaboration

The engagement served as a platform for both sides to explore concrete areas of collaboration, with discussions centred on how Ghana’s heritage sites could be better safeguarded and how climate resilience could be strengthened within the country’s broader heritage management framework.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO used the session to outline existing national priorities around heritage conservation, providing context for how the Korean-led project might be aligned with ongoing domestic efforts.

For his part, Hon. Iddrisu welcomed the initiative, noting its relevance to Ghana’s own ambitions to preserve its cultural and natural assets for future generations while adapting to emerging climate realities.

“Protecting our heritage sites is not just about preserving the past, it is about safeguarding what defines us as a people for generations to come.”

Part of A Longstanding Ghana-Korea Partnership

Officials from both sides described the Korea-Ghana Heritage Project as an extension of a longstanding relationship between Ghana and the Republic of Korea, one that has spanned several sectors including education, culture and sustainable development over the years.

The project, they noted, builds on this established foundation of cooperation, giving it renewed focus on the specific intersection of climate change and heritage preservation.

By anchoring the initiative within this broader bilateral relationship, both delegations signalled an intention to treat the project not as a standalone intervention, but as part of a continuing programme of engagement between the two countries in areas of shared strategic interest.

Next Steps for Implementation

While the presentation marked a formal step in introducing the project to Ghanaian stakeholders, further engagement is expected between the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO to finalise the specific modalities of implementation over the 2026 to 2030 period.

As climate change continues to pose growing risks to heritage sites across the African continent, the project is likely to be closely watched as a potential model for how international partnerships can be structured to address the dual challenge of cultural preservation and climate adaptation, an issue of increasing importance not just for Ghana, but for heritage-rich nations more broadly.
