Ghanaian contemporary artist Ibrahim Mahama has been awarded one of France’s highest cultural distinctions, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. The honour was presented in a ceremony at the French Embassy in Accra, with French Ambassador to Ghana Diarra Dimé-Labille formally bestowing the medal.

Born in 1987 in Tamale in Ghana’s Northern Region, Mahama has built an international reputation through large-scale installations that repurpose everyday materials tied to Ghana’s economic and colonial history. He is best known for monumental works constructed from stitched jute sacks once used to transport cocoa, charcoal and other commodities.
These expansive textile pieces have draped buildings and public spaces, transforming familiar industrial materials into powerful commentaries on labour, migration, global trade and collective memory.
His practice extends far beyond the studio. Mahama has channelled proceeds from his sales into building cultural infrastructure in his hometown. He founded the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), Red Clay Studio and Nkrumah Volini in Tamale. These spaces function as exhibition venues, open studios, residency programmes and community learning centres, addressing the relative scarcity of contemporary art institutions in northern Ghana and creating platforms for younger artists and local audiences.
Mahama’s international profile has risen sharply in recent years. In 2025 he became the first artist from the African continent to top ArtReview’s influential Power 100 list, which ranks the most significant figures in the contemporary art world.
That same year he received the Gold Award in the Established Artist category at the inaugural Art Basel Awards. In 2026 he was awarded the Arnold Bode Prize by the city of Kassel, Germany, an honour linked to the legacy of documenta and recognising socially engaged artistic practice.
His work has been shown at major international platforms including the Venice Biennale, documenta 14, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale and institutions such as the Barbican Centre in London, White Cube galleries and the Centre Pompidou. Collections holding his pieces include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The French honour arrives at a moment when Mahama’s influence is being felt both as a practising artist and as an institution-builder. By reinvesting in educational and exhibition spaces in Tamale, he has helped shift conversations about where contemporary art is produced, exhibited and valued.
His approach treats art not only as discrete objects for the market but as a means of creating lasting local infrastructure and knowledge-sharing networks.
The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres was established in 1957 to recognise significant contributions to the enrichment of French cultural heritage or the promotion of arts and literature in France and internationally. The rank of Chevalier is the entry level of the three-tier order, followed by Officier and Commandeur.
Recipients have included a wide range of writers, musicians, filmmakers, visual artists and cultural figures.
Ambassador Diarra Dimé-Labille, who assumed her post in Ghana in 2025, has emphasised cultural and educational exchanges as part of the evolving France-Ghana relationship. The decision to honour Mahama aligns with broader French efforts to recognise artistic voices from Africa that engage critically with shared histories of trade, colonialism and cultural exchange.

For Ghana’s contemporary art scene, the award adds to a growing list of international accolades for artists working from the country. Mahama’s trajectory from studies at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi to global exhibitions and institution-building illustrates the increasing visibility of West African contemporary practice on the world stage.
The ceremony itself was relatively low-key but symbolically significant. Photos circulating on social media and local news outlets captured both the formal presentation of the medal and Mahama’s arrival at the embassy.
In the art world, such state honours often serve as public validation of an artist’s sustained contribution rather than a single exhibition or project.
Mahama has consistently framed his work around questions of material history and social responsibility. By turning discarded commercial packaging into monumental public statements and then converting commercial success into educational spaces, he has modelled a practice that links aesthetic innovation with tangible community benefit.
The French recognition acknowledges both dimensions of that practice.
