The European Union Delegation to Ghana has announced the return of the European Film Festival, with its third edition scheduled to take place in Accra from Monday, 5 October to Sunday, 11 October 2026.
The week-long event will bring the best of European and Ghanaian cinema to big screens across the capital, offering audiences a rich programme of films under the theme “Peace, Tolerance & Inclusivity.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on 26 August 2026, the official account of the European Union in Ghana (@EuropeInGhana) declared: “The 3rd European Film Festival in Ghana is here! From 5th to 11th October 2026, the best of European and Ghanaian cinema will be on the big screens in Accra. One week. Unlimited stories. Full lineup coming soon!” The accompanying promotional poster features a vintage film projector casting a strip of cinematic images across Ghanaian and European landmarks, underscoring the festival’s dual cultural focus. The initiative is funded by the European Union.
This marks the first edition of the festival since 2021 and the third overall. The inaugural European Film Festival Ghana took place in February 2020, beginning in Kumasi before moving to Accra. It screened ten award-winning European feature films alongside 25 selected short films from Ghana and the diaspora.
Themes that year included love, activism, environment and identity. Screenings were free and held at venues such as the Alliance Française, Goethe-Institut, National Theatre, Panama Park and Silverbird Cinemas at Accra Mall. The programme also featured industry workshops at the National Film and Television Institute (now part of the University of Media, Arts and Communication) and panel discussions pairing Ghanaian filmmakers with European counterparts.
The second edition followed in September 2021, concentrated in Accra at the Goethe-Institut and Alliance Française. It presented nine recent European films and eleven Ghanaian short films, again emphasising cultural exchange and support for emerging local talent.
Then-EU Ambassador Irchad Razaaly highlighted the festival’s role in showcasing European diversity while prioritising opportunities for young Ghanaian producers. Festival organisers described it as a platform for collaboration and the promotion of Ghanaian culture through cinema.
After a multi-year pause, the 2026 return signals renewed commitment to cultural diplomacy between Europe and Ghana. The festival has historically been organised by the EU Delegation in partnership with several European embassies and cultural institutions, including those of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Malta and Ireland, as well as the Goethe-Institut, Alliance Française and British Council.
