2nd Step

Ghanaian Afrobeats artist Kelvyn Boy has finally put a firm date on the calendar for his next full project.

The post was simple and direct: “2ND STEP (Album) • Friday 25-09,” accompanied by the official cover art. The image shows the artist in a sharp tan suit and blue-tinted sunglasses, hands clasped in a prayer-like pose, while a second figure in a similar outfit walks up a staircase in the background.

The title appears in bold gold lettering above him.

Fans had been waiting for this confirmation for months. Back in May, during an appearance on 3Music TV’s The Big Conversation, Kelvyn Boy first revealed the project’s title and offered a glimpse of its tone. “You’re getting a wounded lion with a bit of love,” he said at the time.

The comment suggested a mix of vulnerability and strength; songs that touch on struggle, recovery, and quieter emotional moments alongside the usual dance-ready tracks.

That description fits the path he has taken since breaking through. Born Kelvin Brown on 1 April 1991 in Assin Fosu in Ghana’s Central Region, he lost his mother early and finished secondary school at Osei Tutu High School in Akropong before committing fully to music. Early singles such as “Pray,” “Toffee” with Medikal, and “Na You” with Stonebwoy caught attention.

He signed to Stonebwoy’s Burniton Music Group in 2018, won Unsung Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards that same year, and released the T.I.M.E. EP in 2019. A few months later he left the label.

The years that followed brought bigger results. Blackstar arrived in 2020 and delivered the Crayon-assisted hit “Tele.” “Down Flat” later crossed the ten-million-stream mark and became one of his signature records. The 2023 project For the Kulture featured King Promise, Tekno, AV and Stefflon Don and leaned into highlife textures mixed with amapiano and classic Afrobeats.

Along the way he has worked with Joey B, Kwesi Arthur, Efya and others, building a catalogue that sits comfortably between romantic Afro-pop and street-level energy.

Recent activity pointed clearly toward a new body of work. In April he released “Weather for 2” with Kojo Blak, a laid-back collaboration that has stayed in rotation. In early September he teased the first single from the album, titled “Pioneer,” which is due next Friday.

Multiple posts throughout August kept the countdown going, including short videos and the simple message that a new album was ready.

2nd Step will be his first full album since For the Kulture three years ago. Industry observers and fans have noted the longer gap and the steady stream of singles in between.

Many see the project as a chance for Kelvyn Boy to reset the narrative after years of consistent features and standalone tracks. The “wounded lion” line has stuck with listeners who expect a more personal set of songs this time around.

The cover art itself has already sparked conversation. The dual figures and staircase imagery feel deliberate -one version of the artist standing still and reflective while another moves upward.

Kelvyn Boy currently sits at just over 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. His older hits continue to perform, and newer records such as “Excellent” and “Weather for 2” have kept him visible on Ghanaian and regional playlists.

Public Reaction

The announcement post quickly picked up hundreds of likes and dozens of reposts, with replies ranging from pure excitement to requests for specific features and early tracklists.

No full tracklist or featured artists have been revealed yet. That information will likely come closer to release or with the arrival of “Pioneer.” For now, the date is locked and the artwork is public. September 25 is just ten days away.

In the Ghanaian music scene, album rollouts of this kind still generate genuine anticipation. Artists who maintain a balance between commercial singles and fuller projects often find that the longer waits pay off once the body of work lands.

Kelvyn Boy has done this before moving from the dancehall-leaning T.I.M.E. to the more expansive Blackstar and then into the cultural nods of For the Kulture. 2nd Step appears positioned as the next chapter rather than a complete reinvention.

Listeners who have followed him since the Burniton days will recognise the familiar voice and melodic approach. Newer fans drawn in by “Down Flat” or the recent Kojo Blak collaboration will get their first extended look at how he constructs a complete project. Either way, the calendar is clear.

Friday 25 September marks the official arrival of 2nd Step. Until then, the focus shifts to the first single and whatever additional details the artist chooses to share in the coming days.

For an artist who has steadily built his catalogue without major interruptions, the straightforward announcement feels characteristic: no long teaser campaign, just a date, a cover, and the music on the way.

The wounded lion, it seems, is ready to take the next step.
