Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, has appealed to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for government support to enable the team to participate in the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.
A delegation from the Black Challenge paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, as part of efforts to secure the financial backing needed for their campaign at the global tournament.
The team used the engagement to highlight the achievements of Ghana’s amputee footballers and the significance of representing the country at the expanded 2026 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico.
The delegation stressed that participation in the tournament would provide valuable international exposure for the players while further raising Ghana’s profile on the global sporting stage. “Our players have shown tremendous dedication and skill in regional competitions, and their participation in the World Cup would be a huge achievement for Ghana,” a representative of the team said.
“However, attending the tournament requires resources that we currently lack, and we are hopeful for the support of our government to make this possible,” the representative added.
The delegation also pointed to the broader social impact of the Black Challenge, saying the players’ determination and achievements have inspired young Ghanaians living with disabilities to embrace sports and lead active lives.
Black Challenge Targeting Another Strong World Cup Campaign
The Black Challenge have established themselves as one of Africa’s leading amputee football nations, with their success on the continent providing a strong foundation for their latest World Cup campaign.
Ghana won the Amputee Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 in Tanzania before successfully defending the continental title in 2024 in Egypt, beating Morocco 2-1 in the final.
The team also claimed gold at the inaugural African Para Games held in Accra in 2023, further underlining their dominance in continental amputee football.
On the global stage, Ghana’s best World Cup finish is sixth place, a position the team achieved at the 2012 tournament in Kaliningrad, Russia.
The Black Challenge have made six appearances at the global competition since their formation in 2007.
They have now secured qualification for the 2026 edition, which will feature 24 nations and is expected to provide Ghana with another opportunity to challenge for a historic finish.
For the players and officials, however, securing qualification is only part of the challenge, with adequate funding required to cover the logistical demands of competing in Mexico.
The delegation therefore stressed that government assistance would not only support the team’s immediate World Cup ambitions but also contribute to the continued development of amputee football in Ghana.
Sports Ministry Considers Sponsorship Request
Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams welcomed the delegation and expressed his support for the Black Challenge’s ambitions, acknowledging the determination demonstrated by the players and organizers.

His comments offer encouragement to a team seeking the resources necessary to compete at the highest level of amputee football.
The Black Challenge’s World Cup campaign also carries significance beyond sporting achievement. Their presence in Mexico would provide an opportunity to showcase Ghanaian talent while reinforcing the role of sport in promoting inclusion and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities.
With the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup scheduled for November in San Juan de los Lagos, the team will now hope that the government’s consideration of their request results in the financial support needed to complete their preparations and travel to Mexico.
For a side that has consistently translated resilience into success on the African continent, the Black Challenge are seeking the backing required to turn another World Cup qualification into an opportunity for global recognition.
