Players and Officials of Hearts of Oak undergo the mandatory training session on the updated laws of the game for the 2026-27 season

The Ghana Football Association has stepped up preparations for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season with a mandatory education programme aimed at improving clubs’ understanding of the Laws of the Game.

The initiative brings together players and club officials for sessions designed to ensure that participants are familiar with the latest interpretations and amendments governing matches during the new campaign.

Representatives of several Premier League clubs have already completed the programme, with the sessions being delivered by the GFA’s Technical Referees Instructors.

Accra Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Bibiani Gold Stars, Basake Holy Stars, Karela United, Heart of Lions and Medeama are among the clubs whose players and officials have gone through the training.

Young Apostles, Swedru All Blacks, Vision FC, Debibi United and FC Ashantigold 04 have also participated in the programme as the GFA continues its rollout across the league.

The exercise comes at a time when the Association is seeking to improve the overall standards of conduct and professionalism within the domestic game, particularly in the relationship between players, club officials and match officials.

Beyond explaining the technical aspects of the rules, the training is intended to give participants a clearer understanding of decisions they are likely to encounter during competitive matches.

This includes the changes introduced to the Laws of the Game for the 2026/27 season, with the GFA using the sessions to ensure that clubs continue the campaign with a common understanding of the updated regulations.

With the Premier League already underway, the Association’s approach places emphasis on education as a means of reducing unnecessary disputes and improving compliance with match-day procedures.

The programme also gives players and officials an opportunity to engage directly with refereeing instructors, allowing areas of misunderstanding surrounding the application of the laws to be addressed before they develop into recurring issues during matches.

The remaining Premier League clubs, Berekum Chelsea, Bechem United, Dreams FC and Port City FC, are expected to complete the planned training as the programme reaches all participating teams.

GFA Reinforces Conducive Environment For Referees to Operate

The GFA considers the education of football stakeholders an important part of creating an environment in which referees can carry out their responsibilities while players and officials understand the boundaries within which they must operate.

Respect for match officials remains a key component of the initiative, particularly as disagreements over refereeing decisions have frequently been part of the wider conversation around Ghanaian football.

By taking players and club officials through the laws directly, the Association is seeking to establish greater clarity around what constitutes an offence, how decisions are made and why certain disciplinary or technical actions are taken during games.

The training is also connected to the GFA’s wider efforts to strengthen professional standards beyond what happens on the pitch.

Players and officials have previously participated in integrity and safeguarding education, reinforcing the Association’s broader focus on ethical behaviour, player protection and responsible participation in football.

As part of those measures, participants were required to sign an Integrity Form, through which they reaffirmed their commitment to fair play and the protection of the game’s integrity.

The combination of laws-of-the-game education, integrity training and safeguarding awareness reflects an approach that goes beyond preparing teams purely for competition.

For the clubs, the sessions provide an opportunity to ensure that coaches, players and administrators are operating with a shared understanding of the regulations, while for the GFA they form part of efforts to improve consistency and professionalism across the Premier League.

With several clubs already completing the exercise and four still to participate, the Association is continuing its engagement with the league’s stakeholders as the 2026/27 season progresses.

The initiative ultimately places responsibility on everyone involved in the competition to understand the rules, respect the decisions of match officials and contribute to a football environment built around fair play and professional conduct.
