Former Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament Adwoa Safo has publicly recognised her brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, as the Leader of the Kantanka Family and the Kristo Asafo Church.

Madam Safo explained that her decision is part of a renewed commitment to family unity and reconciliation, with the former MP stressing the need for the family to work together to preserve their late father’s legacy.

In a statement, she expressed her support for Israel Kwadwo Safo and formally accepted him as the leader of the Kantanka Family and the Kristo Asafo Church.

“I state unequivocally, that, I am prepared and willing to work together with him in the interest of the family and the Church.”

On this, the former MP positioned cooperation among the siblings as necessary for sustaining the institutions and values established by their father. She emphasised that the legacy left behind should not be viewed as the possession of one person, but as a shared responsibility among his children and others connected to his work.

Madam Safo further urged members of the Kristo Asafo Church and the wider Kantanka family to respect the renewed unity among the siblings as they begin what she described as a new chapter.

According to her, her father’s legacy, “transcends any one individual. It is a collective inheritance and a profound responsibility entrusted to us, as his children and it is a charge we must keep and hold on to, dearly.”

Meanwhile, Madam Safo called on those associated with Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo’s work during his lifetime to support the family’s efforts towards reconciliation and renewed cooperation. She urged members of the church and the wider family network to embrace fraternity and a shared sense of purpose as the leadership transition takes shape.

Furthermore, the former MP extended goodwill to Israel Kwadwo Safo and her other siblings, expressing hope that the renewed approach would strengthen relationships within the family. Concluding her statement, Madam Safo called for the new chapter to be defined by peace, forgiveness and collective responsibility as the family seeks to advance the work established by their late father.

Adwoa Safo Seeks Peace After Bitter Family Dispute

Madam Safo’s latest statement marks a significant change from the public positions she adopted during the dispute over succession, the Kristo Asafo Mission and the administration of her late father’s affairs.

Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo died in September 2025, after which disagreements emerged among members of the family over leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission and the implementation of his final wishes. The dispute subsequently became public, with Madam Safo and her brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, taking opposing positions over the direction of the church and family.

The family dispute intensified in June 2026 after Madam Safo was injured in a shooting incident at her brother Israel Kwadwo Safo’s residence in Kwabenya. Police investigations led to the arrest of Israel and eight others, with the accused later appearing before the Adentan Circuit Court and being granted bail of GH¢500,000 each with two sureties.

Madam Safo was subsequently hospitalised after sustaining injuries to the left side of her face, head, ear and lower jaw during the incident. Her family disclosed that she underwent medical treatment and surgeries, while later reports indicated that she received further specialist care at Bank Hospital and abroad.

At the time, Madam Safo described the encounter in more personal terms, alleging that she went  to her brother’s residence without a weapon, security escort or personal driver in an attempt to resolve the disagreement surrounding his planned installation. She later said the confrontation left herfearing for her life.

“I did not go to Akofena’s house armed. I carried no firearm, had no bodyguard or personal driver with me. I was simply dressed in a T-shirt, shorts, slippers and a cap, and I drove myself there. Instead of a peaceful meeting, I ended up fighting for my life.”

Meanwhile, police searches reportedly resulted in the recovery of firearms and ammunition from locations connected to the accused, while the prosecution presented its account of how the confrontation unfolded. Israel Kwadwo Safo denied wrongdoing and told investigators that he had left the scene before the shooting began.

Furthermore, Madam Safo’s lawyers subsequently petitioned the Attorney-General to have the case transferred from the Circuit Court to the High Court. They argued that the principal offence was a first-degree felony and therefore required trial before the High Court.

Against this backdrop, the dispute also spilled into disagreements over the funeral arrangements for Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo, eventually resulting in court intervention to temporarily restrain Madam Safo from proceeding with planned burial arrangements.
