The World Assemblies of God Fellowship has honoured President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama at the opening session of its 10th Triennial Congress in Accra on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Reverend Stephen Wengam, Congress Host and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Ghana, presided over the presentation.
The global executive recognised President Mahama as the first Assemblies of God member worldwide to rise to the highest office in his country, and it credited Mrs. Mahama with leading her husband to the church and running a compassion ministry for the vulnerable.
Reverend Stephen Wengam disclosed that the executive chose to honour three distinguished personalities who had served the fellowship well.
“Assemblies of God believes that the gospel is not only preached through words but then in the marketplace wherever we work, especially in politics, we must shine as light.”

A Historic First for the Fellowship
Reverend Wengam invited the Global Chairman and the Executive Leadership Team to join him on stage. He then called on the President and the First Lady to come forward and receive the award and presentation from the fellowship.
He noted that President Mahama’s recognition has precedent. The American church invited him to its centenary celebration in 2014, where he served as special guest of honour in Springfield.
The New York District of the Assemblies of God also extended an invitation, Reverend Wengam disclosed, to honour him for being the first member of the church to reach that office.
Citation Charges Mahama to Represent Christ in Politics
The fellowship presented President Mahama with its maiden Global Leadership Excellence and Trailblazer Award. The citation praised his continuous loyalty to Christ and to the denomination and credited him with an unequalled role in the success of the congress, which runs in Accra from October 14 to 16, 2026.
It further stated that he inspires many generations to use their political positions to advance the kingdom of Christ, and it named his legacy of faith, mission-mindedness, integrity and humility that mirrors Christ.
Global Chairman Reverend Dominic Yeo, Vice Chairman Reverend Doug Clay and General Secretary Reverend Juan Carlos Escobar presented the award. Reverend Wengam explained its symbols.
The crown charges President Mahama to represent Christ well in politics, while a Bible came with a charge of its own. “The word of God must be your guide in this journey.”
The honour arrived on the same day President Mahama used his keynote to urge churches toward practical community service and to insist that faith must deepen humility in leadership.
Chakwera Joins the Presentation
Former Malawian President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera joined President Mahama at the presentation. Reverend Wengam used the moment to recount a conversation from the 2014 centenary celebration of the American church.
Former President Chakwera was then contemplating a move into politics, and Reverend Wengam observed that Christians tend to look closely at anyone who ventures into that arena.
A meeting with President Mahama followed, and Reverend Wengam took part in it. There, former President Chakwera mentioned that he had been inspired greatly by President Mahama’s bold step. Former President Chakwera went on to become President of Malawi, and Reverend Wengam summed up the sequel in a single line: the rest is history.
First Lady Honoured for Soul Winning and Compassion
Reverend Wengam turned next to the First Lady, whom he called a prime soul winner who was not selfish with the gospel. He explained that when she encountered the light in Assemblies of God, she managed to bring her husband into the faith and into membership of the church.
The fellowship also saluted her work beyond the pulpit. Reverend Wengam stated that “the global fellowship is acknowledging her compassion ministry to the vulnerable in society.”
Her citation recognised her for leading President Mahama to Christ and subsequently her entire family. It linked that spiritual step to her husband’s elevation to the offices of vice president and president, and to its impact on the advancement of the kingdom of God.
The fellowship further commended her for bringing hope and relief to the vulnerable, remaining loyal to Christ and to the denomination while serving as First Lady, and giving immense support to the organisation of the congress.
The citation closed with the hope that present and future generations would draw inspiration from her love for God and her positive impact on society.
