The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed prospective parliamentary aspirants to declare their intention to contest.
General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua announced the timeline at a press conference, clarifying that the exercise precedes the formal opening of nominations and does not authorise aspirants to begin campaigning.
The process, which attracts an application fee of GH¢5,000, is intended to establish an initial register of interested candidates while allowing the party to prepare for the selection of parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2028 general elections. Mr Frimpong emphasised that the declaration of intent is “an administrative step, not confirmation of candidature or permission to canvass for support in constituencies.”
“From 1st November to 10th November open our portal for any interested person who wants to be nominated to stand on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party to declare his or her interest through our portal.”

According to the General Secretary, the party has introduced the procedure as a new approach to its parliamentary selection process, drawing lessons from its defeat in the 2024 elections and subsequent reorganisation. He explained that the NPP intends to pursue a peaceful and orderly selection process capable of strengthening its prospects of returning to power in 2028.

Consequently, Mr Frimpong cautioned interested members against interpreting the announcement as “the commencement of constituency campaigns.” He clarified that nominations have not yet opened and that aspirants, including sitting Members of Parliament, are expected to follow the instructions issued by the party.
The designated portal, “ppc.nppghana.org” will receive declarations throughout the ten-day window. Applicants are required to submit their details and pay the stipulated fee as part of the initial procedure.
In addition to collecting expressions of interest, the party intends to examine whether prospective candidates satisfy its constitutional requirements and the relevant laws of Ghana. The checks are intended to ensure that those seeking nomination meet the necessary standards before progressing further in the selection exercise.
Mr Frimpong characterised the initiative as an innovation in the NPP’s internal political processes, noting that “it is the first time the party has adopted this particular approach.” He urged members interested in parliamentary representation to observe the prescribed timeline and await further directives on nominations.
NPP Plans Training For Aspirants to Preserve Unity
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will introduce a structured training and capacity-building programme for prospective parliamentary candidates as part of its preparations for the 2028 general elections.
General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua explained that the initiative is intended “to equip aspirants with a deeper understanding of the party’s history, ideology and the responsibilities associated with parliamentary representation.”
The programme will also prepare potential candidates to work with party stakeholders, understand parliamentary duties and appreciate what is expected of them if selected to contest on the NPP ticket. Mr Frimpong positioned the exercise as a means of improving candidates’ preparedness while safeguarding peace, continuity and cohesion within the party throughout the selection process.
“You must understand our history. You must understand our ideology and you must also understand what it entails to become a member of parliament and what is expected of you in parliament. So this is a way of preparing people who are aspiring to become our parliamentary candidates.”

The General Secretary elucidated that parliamentary candidates require more than personal ambition or the desire to win a seat, since effective representation involves working with others and understanding the institution they seek to enter.

Accordingly, the training programme will take place in three geographical zones during December 2026. The northern zone is scheduled for December 1 to 4, followed by the middle zone from December 8 to 11, while the southern zone will hold its workshop from December 15 to 18.
Mr Frimpong observed that the initiative follows a series of research undertaken after the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. These included the presidential primaries, polling station elections, electoral area elections, constituency elections and national officers’ elections, which the party undertook as part of its reorganisation for the 2028 contest.
He also identified candidate preparation as an important consideration in achieving a selection process that does not leave the party fractured after the internal competition. The programme is therefore intended to guide prospective contenders through the expectations of candidature while helping preserve relationships among members with competing parliamentary ambitions.
In addition to the training, the party will assess prospective candidates’ eligibility under its constitution and Ghanaian law. The checks are intended to establish whether applicants meet the necessary requirements before they can proceed through the nomination process.
