Local government minister releases nominees for MMDCEs position

Dan Botwe, Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development has expressed confidence that majority of persons nominated by President Akufo-Addo will be confirmed within 10 days from the release of the appointment list.

The Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, has released the list of nominees for the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) positions.

Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, September 19, 2021, Mr Botwe stated that the Regional Directors of the Electoral Commission will on Monday get in touch with the Presiding Members of the various Assemblies and start the process of confirming the President’s nominees.

“For now, ladies and gentlemen, what we have here are nominees. Mr President will issue appointment letters to these nominees after they have been confirmed by the various Assemblies. After that, we may then be able to have a good analysis of those who were retained, new and the gender representation”.

Once approved by their respective Assemblies, they will assist the President at the local government level during his second term. of the 260 nominees, 38 are females whereas 222 are males.

No female was nominated in the Western and Ahafo regions according to the list.

Greater Accra Region has eight females nominated for the MMDCEs role with 21 males nominated in the same region.

Police deploy personnel to foil protest

Meanwhile, the Police Administration has deployed personnel nationwide to curb any disturbances that may arise following the release of the list of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.

According to the acting Director of Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori, the police will do everything possible to ensure peace in the country.

Additionally, he revealed that fourteen police divisions in the Greater Accra Region have been supported with personnel from the Regional Command to ensure they’re up to the task.

“The police administration has directed all the 16 Regional Commanders to make sure that they deploy personnel in the respective regions and ensure that they halt any attempts to disturb the peace of the country.

“Therefore, the police have increased their presence and visibility, especially in Accra. All the 14 divisions in Accra have deployed personnel across and the region’s command has also given them support, and we are monitoring development closely”.

Protestors arrested in Ododiodoo constituency

Prior to this, the police have arrested four leaders of the concerned youth of Ododiodoo constituency, who led a street protest on Saturday, September 18, 2021, against President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint former Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Elizabeth Sackey, as the next Mayor of Accra.

Contained in a statement, it stated that the protesters were arrested for causing public disorder at Jamestown.

“The police have arrested four persons for allegedly causing public disorder at Jamestown in Accra.

“The four are Salaami Abubakari, 36, Daniel Opare Oman, 43, Edward Holm, 38, and Daniel Clottey, 41 years old. The ringleaders led scores of people to allegedly block a road at Jamestown by burning car tyres, further creating a sense of fear and disorder”.
