Former Acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh, has called on Authorities of ECOWAS to focus on what triggers the Coup D’états.

Speaking on the recent coup cases, he averred that focusing on what triggers the coups will aid the various countries prevent and put measures in place to curb it.

“Authorities must focus on the triggers. The triggers of insecurity which are rumor mongering, slander, living insincere corrupt life styles, must be dealt with.”

James Bomfeh

James Bomfeh further called on authorities to deal with the military takeovers in West African countries.

The Former CPP General Secretary stated that the military intervention in the governance of Ghana is not an option. In the view of Mr. Bomfeh, there are other ways to deal with the defects of the democracy without resorting to Military intervention.

“The constitution gives us a plethora of options to check our leaders and so to opt for a military intervention in democracy is no.”

James Bomfeh

Mr. Bompeh further averred the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is powerless when it comes to enforcing order in member states.

“ECOWAS is a loose body of Heads of States with no power. It lacks the capacity to forcefully enter a country to enforce order.”

Leaders to be blamed

Also commenting on the ongoing coups, a member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, blamed the military takeovers in West African countries on some of the leaders.

Mr. Amaliba indicated that some of the leaders have tampered with their respective constitutions to enable them hold on to power. A situation, he noted, gives rise to uproar and the desire of the people to take the law into their own hands.

According to Abraham Amaliba, when there is poor governance, it makes people feel they have the right to rescue the country thus the attempt of coups some West African countries have witnessed so far.

“When I hear people say, the Military should stay out of politics, they should be staying in the barracks, I tell them they don’t know how they feel. Everybody feels they have the right to rescue the country from the doldrums. The presidents who sat yesterday, do they engage in self introspection?”

Abraham Amaliba

Meanwhile, ECOWAS has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy, freedom and good governance in the West African region.
At the just ended summit, the leaders raised concern over the breach of constitutional order in the region notably with the recent military coup d’états and attempted coup d’état in some Member States.

In this regard, the Commission of ECOWAS has been instructed to expedite the review of the 2001 Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the related legal instruments.
