E-Levy: Government Is Determined To Entrench Unconstitutional Conduct- Okudzeto Ablakwa

Okudzeto took the best decision resigning- Ebo Mensah

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has intimated that government is determined to implement the Electronic Levy (E-levy) regardless of the application for its injunction.

Okudzeto Ablakwa lamented that although 137 NDC Members of Parliament could not take a decision rejecting the 2022 Budget, 136 NPP Members of Parliament have taken a decision passing what he termed as obnoxious, punitive, regressive, repugnant and unpopular E-Levy.

“From all indications, Government is obviously determined to further entrench their unconstitutional conduct by ignoring our widely publicized application for an injunction which has been duly served on their agents, assigns and privies including the GRA.”

According to the North Tongu MP, President Akufo-Addo who boldly and in public glare celebrated the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Abdulai case, knows his government is acting with obscene impunity. Mr. Ablakwa added that the President is blatantly desecrating the very 1992 Constitution he urged Ghanaians to respect in his national address commemorating thirty years of the referendum on the Constitution yesterday, April 28, 2022.

“The President’s message therefore appears to be: my government and I are above the Constitution, we are monarchs of all we survey and we don’t give a toss about the rule of law. We, however, expect and demand of the rest of you to obediently remain under the Constitution.”

Minority will continue pursuing case

The North Tongu MP assured that the Minority will “patriotically and doggedly” continue to pursue the case at the Supreme Court which is expected to be heard on the May 4, 2022. He averred that the team has issued instructions to its lawyers to draw the apex court’s attention to the contemptuous conduct of the Akufo-Addo’s government and “we hope to see what the court’s reaction would be”.

Okudzeto Ablakwa posited that there can be no greater or nobler calling than a mission to uphold and defend the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. He cautioned those acting with impunity and contempt to take note that the sovereignty of Ghana resides in the Ghanaian people.

“True power belongs to the people. Very soon, when the people have had enough and no longer desire a further deterioration into the abyss of a failed state, they shall rise like a volcanic eruption to defend the Constitution as good citizens are enjoined under Article 3 of the 1992 Constitution, that day may not be far from now.”

GRA not ready for E-levy implementation

Meanwhile, the Ningo Prampram Lawmaker, Samuel Nartey George, has dismissed assertions by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) that the Charging Entities have not integrated with the E-levy Management System.

According to Sam George, the reason why GRA is unable to roll the system out is not the reason they are giving. He stated that it is not the preparedness of the charging entities, it is the unpreparedness of the GRA to provide the charging entities the requisite connection within the required time frame to do the work. “I put out the fact that the GRA will not be able to roll out the E-levy as they claimed it will.”
